Got a little silver chain.

Snowed again last night and the roads were a sheet of ice, so I slowly and carefully drove to the local football field again.
I did something different, actually Ground Balanced and set up a tad hot on sens...for me thats 65 ish.:heh:..since I've swept this place many times there are few shallow coin targets left...

I started hitting all sorts of deep silver pings beyond the depth of my 6" screwdriver!, solid dimes and Q signals, 8" or more deep....I left them there, even though I had the trowel in the car, I did not feel comfortable with it out there, and decided if I ever NEED some silver, I know where it is.. I got a few silver coins out of here before that were shallow enough to reach, so I sort of mentally took note of their locations, and put a zinc penny right on top of the signal so I can find it again in a hurry if I want to dig it someday. Wanted gold jewelry, so I worked the areas where it should be lost, and went after all the really obtuse and crappy signals..

Over by the longjump pit, working slow on the outside perimeter of it, got a strange signal.....stabbed this fake cross, (bale attached) and KNEW the other signal was the chain! It was a soft 23ish and scattered, (Gold?) But who would put such a cheapo cross on a gold chain I wondered... I gently probed into the heart of the signal at the same depth the cross was at, 3-4"...ran the Fpoint down in the hole to locate it, then got a finger down in there and pulled it out!

Like a lot of silver chains, they dont hit what you would expect silver to sound like at all...depending on size, they could be anywhere from low foil on up. If the location is "right", its a good idea to give everything a shot. Chains are not a good signal at all...thats why theres a lot of them still out there waiting for YOU!:detecting:

Nice!
I have yet to find a chain using the F70.
Looking forward to finding one of any kind and see how it acts.

Congrats!!
That's really funny because just a few days ago I found smallest finest silver chain I've ever found weighing just 2.5g in a tot lot. It also rang up as 23 on the F70 so of course I thought it was gold until I saw the 925 stamp and then also tested it.

I found a silver chain so small and thin it actually came in at iron...no higher.
I have dug silver chains from that area up to a real fat chunky men's bracelet at zinc.
Chains are weird...you just have to realize this and dig as many signals as you can and hope you get a surprise.

Nice recovery Mud on the chain. As we know, they aren't the easiest target to dig. Us southern guys sent a batch of our 70's and 80's temps up your way, so you should be seeing spring weather any day now. In fact, we may have sent to much. Got down into the 40's here last night. HH jim tn

Thanks guys! especially YOU JIm! It started out at 32 this am, and now its really nice..maybe 45ish or so. Thanks for sending it on up!.:beers:

Those deep signals I left this am were bugging me, so when the Wife sent me to get some stuff from the store, curiosity got the best of me, so I went back..with a Plan!

I took my little folding lockback and this big spoon, both of which are former finds, got to my "tell pennys", stabbed the screwdriver in right on top of the deeper target, cut a nice hole around it with the knife, pulled out the plug, like popping the top off a pumpkin, dug down in there with the spoon, like gutting said pumpkin, stabbed the coin again, and then fished it out! ALL of them were nothing but deep clad! The F70 tagged them right though, dead on tones, depth and TIDS.....leaving no signs a hole was ever dug there.....

These small tools are perfect if a guy needs to detect deep targets in an active field, both fit in your finds pouch, fast to deploy, harmless, unnoticable, and could be "honestly" said they were found if questioned about having a knife on a schoolyard.

Perfect soil conditions for deep targets, grass is still flat, so nows the time for hunting old silver in parks and fields.. Hey! I'm gonna see if I can sell some spoons on the "Detecting Accessories" page! "Muds Pumpkin Gutters":heh:

Nice find Mud! Wasn't long ago I dug a shallow one that ID'd on the F70 as a pull tab. But don't tell any one.

Mud you did great on the silver chain!

Lots of good info in this thread on how to find silver chains. In a fairly clean new sports field it shouldn't be a problem digging those iron/foil signals to look for chains.

Nice find! I also found a long sterling chain with a cross this past weekend at a club 'fun hunt' of a local park ... it was 2" deep, spread out and came in at '21' (foil) on my F5 w/11" DD coil. Nice surprise, I don't normally dig those signals but was just in one of those 'dig it and find out' modes. Another club member also found a silver chain with his AT Pro not more than 20 feet from this same location.
BTW, we put the chains into little piles and re-checked our machine's readings, they were much higher, up in the coin range.
