Got a Garrett ACE 250 for Christmas

Hi Everyone,

A Garrett Ace 250 is in the mail for me. I have never used a metal detector before. I was wondering if there was any advice or workarounds for quirks for this particular detector anybody has?

Thanks and Happy Holidays
Also, anybody know of a good place to hunt in Southern Arizona?

Watch the DVD but don't listen to it when they say start out in the all metal mode. Start in the coin mode and set the sensitivity to 4 bars. Then detect your own yard. Practice proper target extraction. Then move to some tot lots. Then as you get better you can accept more notches or different modes with increased sensitivity. This will make all the previous places you hunted new again. Good luck!

Set up a test garden. Take a US quarter, a Penny, a nickel, and a bottlecap and a pulltab and bury them 2 inches deep about 16 inches apart. Notice the different signals as you move the coil across them.

Search this thread for one of the many posts on how to properly pinpoint with the 250. Dig everything and realize that you are going to dig a lot of junk but you will probably also find some good loot. I found starting at a school where there were a lot of targets was helpful for me. It will also give you a taste of just how much is buried out there. Be respectful of the property where you dig, get permission if necessary, leave the grounds in better condition than when you arrived (pick up liter etc.)

Good luck and please post some pictures.

Keep this in mind, and know it "going-in".....but don't get discouraged, it's just part of the learning curve. You got a great detector, take the time to learn it & you'll be extremely happy with it.
