Got A Cool Ring Today

Went out for awhile to a camp that I've hunted for about 3 years now. Got some good lead and a gold ring that looks like it is a locket ring. Has a 14 stamped inside the ring. I thought I would never find the little door and also some of the glass that was in it. QUESTIONS?? When did they start stamping the inside of the rings with the gold type and how old is it? By the way, found with a 705 with the 18.75 HF 10.5 coil............MO

here is what I found doing a google search, hope this helps. Looks like 1932 is the year:
In 1932, 15 and 12 ct were abandoned in favor of 14 ct, which was also marked 585. 9 ct continued to be legal, also marked 375. In 1975, all gold marks were standardized, and the crown mark and the fineness in thousandths became the only marks to be used in addition to place of assay and date letter.

Looks like it could have been a watch Ring? The one side has a cut out for the stem of the watch? Just a thought.

I've seen rings like that. They can be used for putting "substances" in it and used to drug a drink or the "substance" can used by the person wearing it.

I once found a ring type gold object with some broken glass in it with my metal detector. But it had a ring too small for a finger, the right size for a neck chain. I had no clue what it was. I later saw one in a museum, it was a seal stamp. You know the kind that people put into wax or ink on official documents.

morelic55, that ring you found has a trap door in it to hold something like runningwater said. Either hidden or to show off. If it had a 'see through' glass trap door(and not a solid gold door or colored stone) then it was probably a locket to hold something to show off.

Google> "locket ring"

A locket ring would not be big enough to hold a shot of whisky, as that would be the only use of it for me, heheha.
