Got a Classic Sl IDX today and looking for info

Hello everyone, Today I got a nice Classic Sl IDX. stopped on the way home at a playground and walked away with 65 cents and a matchbox car....WIN
I am looking for some first hand info/video's of this one in action and a very good explanation of what the knobs do exactly and any tips on what to listening for.
I have looked but can not find the correct book for it on the Whites website.

Hi,
http://www.whiteselectronics.com/media/downloadable/files/samples/c/l/cl_id_idx_instruction_manual.pdf
Yours has the 950 coil on it.
Good luck

Picked up one myself last week.
Here's what I have learned reading Monte's posts:
Run frequency turned all the way clockwise for best performance. Turn it only to avoid crosstalk with other detectors.
You should be able the max out the sensitivity. If not, turn it back just enough to stop false signals.
Black sand switch actually expands the lower end of the discrimination. So the distance from Iron up to about tab range on the knob will increase in black sand mode. This allows the detector to handle mineralization and beach black sand better. Leave it in normal mode unless you have highly mineralized soil or are hunting a beach with lots of black sand.
Run discrimination as low as you can stand it to increase depth. I run at about 9 o'clock on the dial. Just enough to knock out iron nail.
The toggle under the screen switches between pin point mode, discrimination mode and all metal mode. Pulled toward you is pin point mode. This switch is a momentary and will pop back to center (discrimination mode). Center is discriminate and pushed forward is all metal mode. What I really like is that the ID screen will still ID targets in all metal. This gives you a little extra depth when you get to an area where you think there might be goodies really deep.

So far, I am impressed with its stable depth. Dug dimes at a measured 6-7 inches with solid strong signal using an 8 inch coil. I noticed that the ground balance was slightly positive with the coil change, but this didn't cause a problem. Under the flag decal is a small hole through switch you can adjust the ground balance with a small screw driver, just be careful as the potentiometer is fragil. The detect has very fast recovery so try a smaller coil (6 inch) in some of those trashy areas you gave up on using other detectors and you may be pleasantly surprised. Just sweep slowly with short sweeps.
There is a modification to this detector that used to be done by a moderator of one of the foreums on the site I think called the Mr. Bill mod. It adds external ground balance and threshold controls, an SAT adjustment switch and increases the ID meter's sensitivity. Search IDX pro/CLassic Mr.Bill Mod. He has posted what he did to the board now that he has retired. I'm collecting the components and am going to have a friend with electronics skills do the mod for me.

Good luck and enjoy,

Leeinsc

Passing along a very good tip I got from OregonGreg; That this is a slow motion detector and one may need to slow down their sweep speed for best results. I had a chance to examine the mode control circuit of my IDX Pro while doing the "Mr. Bill's" mods. and observed that the pinpoint mode is actually a spring returned switch position for the all metal mode.
I like this detector and think you will like yours too.

First order of business-never EVER sell it. I don't care if the rent is due or you want a boat or Guido is at your door with a sock full of nickels, never EVER sell it. I have 2 stock IDX Pros that will be put in my coffin when the time comes. O.K.,maybe just the coils....they are great, simple, powerful, nicely weight balanced, easy to use....shall I go on? There isn't a bad thing about them, other than an external ground balance from the factory would've been nice, but to me it's so trivial it's not worth complaining about. Besides, the info is out there on how to put the control on the outer case so maybe next winter you have a project. Is this your first detector? If so just take it out and get in a lot of hours with it,this is definitely a "several level" machine, meaning that you master the basics and then go on to really tweaking it,learning to hunt in all metal and listen to the threshold, etc. Switching from the 950 coil to the 8" coil to the 6.5 coil is a trip in itself, they all have their own personalities and abilities. This is true with any machine but this one is a lot of fun, never doubt it's ability. After a long time you will know how the monotone sounds different when it finds different things. You have gotten one HELL of a great old unit, hopefully you will realize this for yourself over time.

I agree with IDXmonster, never sell it! My classic III sl, the younger brother, will stay with me forever.

Enjoy your IDX Pro, it's a great machine. As Monte says there is no one perfect machine, but for hunting ghost towns and places with lots of trash, not too many machines will keep up with the Classic series machines. Put a Bullseye 5.3 on it and very slow sweep and it really does a great job in trash. Set your disc to just knock out a nail and your set. Your IDX Pro is one of few machines that can get 8 out of 8 on Monte's nail board test. If you want to see how good a machine you really have, try this nail board test. You will be surprised at how many machines will only hit the coin 3 times or less. Here is a link to the nail board:

http://www.ahrps.org/tipsandtechniques.php

Once there click on the two highlighted links, one explains the test, the other provides a template to make your own. This will also show why you should not become completely dependent on your target ID. In the test you can just use a modern zinc penny.

The one thing about the "Freq Adj" knob is that if your machine does not have the Mr. Bills mods (external ground balance and threshold adjustments) then always leave the Freq Adj at the preset setting. If you move it to another position it will throw off your ground balance. With the mods you can quickly re-ground balance the machine. I never understood why Whites put a freq adj knob and then no way ( short of using a small screwdriver thru the hole under the flag sticker) to ground balance it. So it is always best to leave the freq adj set at the triangle preset setting to match the factory GB setting.

And like some have said above, if you got a nice IDX Pro, don't ever sell it. They aren't making this great detector anymore. I have a few myself and will never part with them. I feel the Classic ID, Classic IDX or IDX Pro makes a great machine to Compliment my other detectors. I use my MXT Pro and M6 alot, but when I get into a really nasty area, lots of iron nails etc then I'll use my IDX Pro w/5.3 coil or my Classic ID w/350 snooper coil. They are a 2 filter slow sweep fast recovery machine. To have the ability to make a very slow, very small side to side sweep with a small coil really sniffs out the good stuff.

I feel the same way about the classics, i have owned 2 idx- pro's which are pretty much the newer model of that unit ,they are great machines, i wouldn't part with mine either.

I have an IDX Pro that I bought 2 years ago that is stock and in absolutely mint condition and I will never sell it. I take very good care of it, and am very careful with it when I take it out. It is an awesome machine IMO, and I enjoy hunting with it.

Got first silver with my new to me Classic IDX. Hunting a very old ball field that has produced in the past but quality targets are getting harder to come by. Put on the 600 Blue Max coil and hunted slow down the 3rd baseline. Lots of shallow trash and zinc signals. Finally got a deep signal. Merc was a good 6 inches. Sounded off solid but could only hit it with a very short swing from one direction. Found out why has iron trash came out of the hole. Love the IDX. Surprisingly deep with the small coil.

I have had a Classic IDX for years but only last couple years really used it a lot and have found plenty with it I love it. Only have one problem the box is loosening up could not find where the screw were to tighten it up any help on this would be really helpful. This is my first post on here really liking this place more than others. Thank you
