Got a 10in.DD 7.5kz Coil Coming - Questions

I have a X70 and have got a 10 in.DD 7.5kz coil coming and was wondering how this coil stacks up to my stock 9in.? I hunt in Wisconsin with some mineralization, but not real bad. How is it for depth and pinpointing etc. Any thoughts on this coil is appreciated. I have heard it maybe Minelabs best coil for the Xterra's??? Thanks Joe

Comparing the depth of the 10-inch DD to the 9-inch concentric has alot to do with your soil conditions. You know where I live. And I imagine our soil is very similar in mineralization. What I've found around here is that the concentric coils hunt just as deep as the larger DD coils. The large DD coils cover more ground with each sweep. But I don't see much difference in depth at the center point. As to pinpointing, my favorite method of pinpointing with the DD coil is to wiggle it over the target as I slowly drag the coil toward me. When the target sound "drops off" the front tip of the coil, dig at that front tip. That will get you REAL close. JMHO HH Randy

It's heavy but it make the machine really work almost like a different unit. I noticed a bunch more depth right away and don't regret buying one. It seems that I almost get as deep with the 6" mid freq. as I do with the stock coil on mine so be ready to dig a little deeper

Just ordered one from Detector Depot. Can't wait to try it out.

In my area the 10.5 is around 1-2 inches deeper. I pinpoint with mine a little different than most probably. I do like digger said and wiggle it but when the sound drops off I just push it back forward until I get a sound again and the target is usually right under the square minelab sticker on the coil. I may have to go out and video it and put it on youtube. It took me a little while to figure it out. Can be frustrating if no one has told you how....;o)

Thanks, I'll try that.

Here is a video I made of how I pinpoint with the 10" dd coil. I sometimes will press the pinpoint button again once I am over the target to get a smaller signal.

Great instruction, I'll try that when I receive mine.

I have tried both Randys and Bills method of pinpointing and like them both. I have noticed that using Randys method is best for coins. The only thing I know for sure...if the 10.5 DD 7.5KHz says its there you had better dig . Good Luck and HH TomB

The only time I don't like the 10.5" coil is when there is a lot of junk in the area I detecting. It's so sensitive, that when you get a lot of items under the coil, it's a little frustrating. The 6 " coil is a great coil to have under those type of situations. I'm sure you will like it. It really does go deep and covers a wide area quickly. I got the 6" 18.75 coil and use it a lot also.

Good hunting, John K

The area I live in is very low in minerals. I bought the 10.5DD HF to hunt the beach but with my bad shoulder, I just haven't used it very much and am thinking about selling it. I have compared it to the stock 9" concentric and the difference is just about "0", they are real close to the same except for the weight factor, the 9" is so much lighter. I have also compared my 6"DD HF to the stock coil and the stock coil is maybe 1" deeper but the 6" is a dream in trashy areas and I can swing it all day with my bad shoulder. I have honestly found silver dimes with my 6" at a measured 8", not bad for such a small coil, it is definately a keeper....The 10.5"DD would excel in highly mineralized soils, I will be putting mine up for sale soon. HH John

Sounds like that 6" coil would be deadly in CW sites that are littered with iron. I have a 10.5" on the way I got some extra hardware for modding my setup for just that coil. But, now I gotta get me one of the 6" DD coils.
