I went out early this morning. What a beautiful day too. I didn't even need a jacket this afternoon. Today's adventure got a tie clip, a musket ball, 4 x silver dimes and lots of clad. I also found this unusual token, which I would like to research further, as I haven't a clue what it is about. :(

WTG John !

You sure do find a lot of silver !

Interesting token ...is it a medical alert type item ?

I'd say it was an ID piece that at point of purchase you could have your name and address engraved or stamped on it. What's it say on the front?

Bill

...good oldies, and as noted, you are a silver magnet. It also helps that you are the only detectorist in the entire province, I'm sure.

The token is aluminum as you said. Notice on the reverse it even says so at the top: "Aluminum Pocket Piece." Aluminum was a 'wonder metal' back in the early parts of the 20th century, when it first came into common use. I have found others of similar make and I suspect it would have been made either prior to WWII or sometime thereafter - aluminum being a strategic material during the war.

As far as I can tell, these things were promotional items given away by the company named on the front of the piece. Yours looks like it has the name "God - - - Glo - - rite Co." As Bill said, you would have your name engraved or stamped on it where you got it, say at the Western Auto or Sears store one Saturday afternoon.

Then you'd carry it in your pocket - in hopes that you poor carcass could be identified should you be in an accident. Of course the company hoped you'd remember to buy their products or services somewhere along the line, too. We call such things "promo's" now - frisbees, balloons, and so on, made of plastic, of course.

Ive seen similar ones that ID the carrier as a Catholic, too, and I carry a card that states so in my wallet, as we speak.

Pretty neat piece. Can you clean it up a but and get the corrosion off enough to make out more?

COD LIVER GLYCERINE CO.
ST. LOUIS USA

But the stuff in the center is too worn. Here is a closeup.....

....It could have been picked up at a drug store, too, I suppose. Glycerine is used to emulsify cod liver oil and make it more workable, so it cn be put up in capsules etc. It had its heyday in the 20's-50's. Definitately neat-o.
