Good weekend in Phoenix

TexanWest

New member
Had a pretty good weekend in Phoenix. Saturday it was trying to rain (OK, it flooded, but I got in a couple of hours at a park that wasn't that old). Then Sunday went downtown and hunted a park that was supposedly hunted out. The Deus proved itself on Sunday. I was able to pull out 4 Silver dimes. (1903 Barber, 1912 Barber, 1945 Mercury, and a 1960 Rosie) also got 9 wheaties, 2 tokens, and a bunch of other coins. I was cherry picking, notched out almost everything except good coins, after tons of tabs (I knew they were tabs before extracting) I notched them out also as I was wanting to increase my time searching for Silver and Wheaties. It worked :)

I haven't cleaned anything yet, just too busy to mess with it right now, but may play with cleaning some this week if I'm not swamped.

Oh, I got permission from the Parks dept before hunting, they told me that I wouldn't have much luck as they have people hunting there every week... :nopity: They must not be able to get between all the trash and hit the good stuff from different angles?

I only hit an area about 30 foot by 70 ft. I was slow and mythodical about circling any noise that sounded like a coin. I hunted the area East and West, then again North and South. I may have missed some, but I've only touched a tiny portion of that park. Looks like it's going to be a great Winter :detecting:

This token is a Arizona Tax credit issued back in the 1930's, it should clean up well.

I will post cleanup pictures of the silvers, wheaties, and the tokens after I take the time to clean them up.

I know somebody is going to say something about all the stuff that I missed by notching. I already know that.. If you had my aching bones, you would do the same.

HH everybody!

I created my own program that is very limiting. Some would call it too restrictive, yet my results haven't made me regret my lack of trash. (too old, tired, and too many injuries to spend a day on my knees for trash with fingers crossed)

Program:
12 khz
ID Norm (or the notches will be wrong)
Discrimination: 10
Full tones
sensitivity: 85
TX Power: 1
Iron Volume: 0
Reactivity: 4-5
Silencer 1
Audio Resp: 3
Audio Overload: 1
Notch: 1st Notch 10-60, 2nd Notch 66-88
ground: about 2 above the actual ground (stops some of the chatter)

It's important to say, that I dug 1 coin yesterday at about 7 inches and it was faint, this program will NOT go deep. Nor do I want to do deep. Most of the targets out here because this is the desert are less than 4 inches down unless somebody brought in new soil. One of my silvers yesterday was just under the grass, I got it without tools. If I want depth, I can get depth.

The notch for nickels allows for nickels, and they tend to only fluctuate 1-2 points on the VDI. Most of the pull tabs can jump several numbers and they chirp much more than a nickel will. Nickels are my favorite coin, but when I'm in 100 years of trash and where I can get silver, I often try to quit digging tabs even when I can identify them.

I'm missing out on IH pennies because they fall where zinc does on the VDI, but most of the places that I can hunt aren't likely to have any IH pennies in the ground. Perhaps I could have found one yesterday if I had dropped that upper notch down to 85? I doubt it.

Oh, I'm here full time. This is my home.

That AZ tax token is very cool - much better than the aluminum MS tax token I found last week!

You can't argue with success with your program settings...looks like you did very well! You can always go back one day and hunt for Indians if you are so inclined, probably drop the notch to around "83" allowing for a little downward trending due to nearby iron, etc.

Sweet....

I saw Texas and thought you was a snow bird......

I am up in NW Arizona, Bullhead City (Across from Laughlin, NV.)

These look better without all the dirt on them. That Barber on the top looks terrible. The 1912 looks great. Now they live in a jar.

Your right, that 1912 looks beautiful.....

Jim, I felt bad about posting pictures of my silver that was in such bad shape. Cleaning coins is a hassle.. Maybe you have a quick and easy way? Now they all look good. I was very suprised to see how well that 1902 cleaned up. That tarnish and dirt was thick. I may clean up that tax token as well.

Jim, I have a good friend that is also in Bullhead, he just bought his 1st detector last week (Minelab 705 I think). He needs some pointers, so I may head out next weekend to Bullhead if I have the time. How do we send private messages thruough this forum? I would like to send you my phone number in case you are looking to hunt in the Phoenix area sometime.

Take care, Jim (DiggerDude if you look on the XP Dealers list for AZ)

I got a msg from him on another board.....

Send msgs here: (beside the Name):

Well drat, hopefully you know how to contact me through the dealer list. The weekend is coming fast and I feel a hunt coming on. I may drive that way depending on customer requests? Would be great to meet you and Mark (my friend there) soon.

My old Park in Phoenix keeps kicking out the goods. I only get to hunt a few hours per week, so my expectations are small. Especially since the manager of the Park Service told me that 2-3 people hunt that Park each week. I do know that all of the trash is still there, I've gotten 9 silver dimes, several old nickels including an old Buffalo and a 1943 silver War nickel. 30-40 wheats, lots of other copper. It's a great old Park

Looking good Jim you are working between the trash pretty well! Congrats
