good tones

OKAY, Gurus, here's one for ya. Yesterday, while out in the field, I noticed a change is the high pitch sound. I started finding clad like it was pouring out of a bucket. I thought, "So this is what the bigboys are using." I was changing settings, mainly senitivity and manual to auto. Here's the question.....when changing from auto to man or vice versa, does it make a difference on the sharpness of tones? I noticed a sharp increase in high-pitched tones. I decided not to change anything from that point. It was late and getting cold and I figured that when I turned the machine back on today that I would have the same results. It didn't happen. I felt that if I was lucky enough to step over an "oldie" that I wouldn't have any trouble nailing it. Besides man and sens, the only thing that I changed was back and forth from 32 to about 24 and back.
I guess what I'm trying to figure out is... if u go from one mode to another does that change the tone wherever the sens might be set at? TKS ALL wmike

It should not. You should be able to toss a few coins on the ground and test this easily enough.
Of course that still leaves with the unanswered question of what changed.

Usually the only thing that will change the tone is the variability and limits settings. I suspect the headphones or the headphone jack has a poor connection and it just kicked in for awhile. I had headphone and jack problems and they can cause the tone quality and volume to vary as well as cutting out. Try wiggling the headphone plug. If it doesn't feel solid you may have jack problems.
If you want to get that kind of sound all the time get the sun ray stand and a set of Gray ghosts. The stand will give you the 1/4" jack and protect the Explorer 1/8" jack which can be fragile. The Gray Ghosts will give you the good sound you need as well as cutting out the outside noise. Then crank up your Variability and limits. I keep var at 8 or 9 and limits at 10. Those coin hits really get your attention then and the range of tones will be greater to help make target i.d. easyer.

Why not run Var. at 10 to get the most in the tones.

Just a litle to much for my poor over used ears. I have a partial hearing loss and need to keep the volume up fairly high for the mid tones and those ultra high frequencies arn't comfortable.

could have been just the ground conditions.. some days those coins just blast out louder

Tks guys, your answers reaffirm my suspicions about my stock headsets and connector. The change was SO noticible during that blip. I thought either my hearing had improved or the XS was telling me that what I was hearing was what the XS was suppose to sound like.
My XS has been sent in once and am on my 2nd pair of stock headsets.
It was an eye-opening experience for me. Maybe there are others who are having the same problem. If the headsets and jack are the problem, then I can say by buying the stand and GG's are definitely a must. Now all I have to do is go back and collect all that clad money that I gave to those inquiring little kids so that I can get the updates.
THANKS AGAIN, wmike

Should there be a difference in the tone of
silver vs clad? I get none on dimes or quarters.
For that matter I get the same tone starting at copper pennys on up thru silver. Do I have problems and don't know it? I do on occasion get a tone higher than clad/silver but its always high left on the IM screen. Need help!!

don't forget... aside from variability and limits,
the audio 1,2,3, gain, ferrous and conductivity settings also change the way tones sound/react to different metals.

Hard to tell clad silvers from real silver but it can be done with a little practice. Silver has a sweeter sound while clads sound a little more harsh and irreregular. The pennies should sound different. They hit a little lower on the meter and tone wise for me with the settings I suggested. Some zinc pennies do hit with the silver and will fool ya every time especially if they are on or very near the surface.
Practice, practice, practice.
