I was talking to sandy at minelab corp. about some interference I was getting on my excal. and she suggested taking off the coil cover and cleaning the coil and inside of the coil cover which I had read before but she suggested after putting cover back on that I seal all around the seam where the coil and the cover come together with silicone which will give you a water tight seal and prevent any sand and dirt from getting between the coil and cover in the future. This will also prevent from having to clean this again.I am going to try it.

Most of us here don't use the coil cover ..Mine is in the trash...
We use a 10min - 50min marine apoxy and paint it on the bottom of the coil

Yeah, the coil cover is bad news on the beach. You get a little salty sand in there and the machine gets real kinky.

Here is what Skully was talking about...shown here on my Fisher CZ coil...I use an Excal at the beach for the last few years now. I was actually the "inventor" of this mod, which has been adopted by many. And I know, that and a dollar will get me a cup of coffee.

Here's the stuff you do it with...it can be obtained at Home Depot as well as many other places. Apply smoothly and evenly with a small brush.

I thank both of you guys for the information . like I said earlier I am new at this having retired after 38 yr as an instrument tec. in a oil refinery,I always wanted to do this.I have a garrett gfi1500 and was planning on using it on the beach were I will in Florida for the winters but different people on this forum advised me to get a water machine and I got an Excalibur off ebay and can't wait to get down there next month.I hope I can find just a fraction of the loot you and the other people find.thanks again.

Some actually swing, with air between the coil and sand, not me. I hunt mostly water and I drag the coil across the bottom, to ensure my coil control is good. Water where I hunt is murky and I cannot see the coil on the bottom. I do not feel the expoxy would hold up to my abuse, without frquent reapplication. I shread a coil cover about once a quarter and remove it after each hunt and maybe once during a hunt to wash it out, it's no big deal, but it needs to be done. Best of luck to ya mate!
