Good pinpoint probe for X-Terra?

Beale

New member
I am looking for a good probe to use when I hunt. I really do not know much about these. What would be a good place to start? Thanks in advance for the help, Beale.

I like my VibraProbe 560. It is a Pulse Induction pinpointer and operates on one 9 volt battery that seems to last all year. One of the best features is that it turns itself on when you hold it upside down. And it shuts itself off about a minute after you put it back in the holster. It vibrates when the tip gets near metal, so you don't have to remove your headphones to use it. It is not sensitive on the sides of the probe portion, so you aren't chasing coins all around the hole. Mine seems to pick up a coin at about 3/4 inch to an inch. This is good because it allows you to pinpoint very well. The closer you get to the target the faster it vibrates. It is waterproof and it floats. You can buy a new one for just under $100. But it will speed up the recovery process immensely! I wouldn't go hunting without mine! HH Randy

Just like digger said, great probe for the money. The battery lasts a good long time as well! I would prefer a little more depth with it and probably should express that to the maker of the Vibraprobe. HH, Mike

They are supposed to be coming out with their 570 this or next month and it is said to be much better.

There is only one if you can afford the price .

The pocket Uni-Probe.

In the UK we have to get them posted from the US but all our friends who have seen them in action and had a hands on agree.

Jerry.

I agree with Jerry here. The pocket probe is a great asset to the X-Terra. They aren't cheap, but they can hit a coin 4+ inches deep! I imported one from the states as well. Unless I'm hunting at a beach, then I won't take the X-Terra out without it now. Who knows; one day Minelab will give Ralph at Sunray the opportunity to make one of his probes to go with the X-Terra's. That would be a terrific asset.

Thanks for the replies. I really like the price on the 560. The pocket uni-probe looks very nice even if a bit pricy. Either way it will be a month or 2 before I buy one. At least now I know where to start looking, thanks again, Beale.

Beale:
How much are the pocket probes??? the 41/2 inch deep one.

The price from the company is $300 if you have your own headphones, $350 if you do not, Beale.

I paid US$269 from Dixie Detectors about 16 months back. The standard price at that time was $299. The Pocket UniProbe is a fully self contained unit and is not one of the ones that are directly hooked into a set of head phones! They look like they can hook straight onto your belt, but I would strongly recommend against doing this as the central connector is very week, and the sideways pressure that you will put on it by operating it from that position, will break the connector (it is located in the middle of the bayonet connection. You can overcome this by getting the unit hardwired before you buy it (at no cost to yourself) or put a strain relief on it. You can wear it on a front pocket or something similar. I use a small camera bag for a a finds bag and attach it to the strap of it, with the probe placed in the bag.

Thanks for the price point Mick and Beale appreciate. Thanks for the heads up on the weak points too.

Hi,

I've used lots of pinpointers, and after getting a Uni-Probe I doubt I'll ever use anything else. Depth is easily 3-4 times better than other pinpointers. I have the type where the Pinpointer is built into the headphone. I almost always use headphones and so that was the better option for me than the Pocket Uni-Probe.
