Good or bad idea?

I want a detector that can find small gold jewelry and that can find coins to, so I was thinking about just getting two detectors. Goldbug Pro and the minelab xterra 705. Any thoughts?

Both very good detectors, but whether they will do the job you want them to do will be up to you, and several other factors, such as "where you are going to use them". HH

Ooh yea deff, Im gonna use them at parks and fields, the main place I'm gonna use them is at this one park I go to, it's a very old park and I found couple silvers and also found a gold ring there before

The Fisher F75Ltd, with extra coils will do all of that. The little 3x6 is pretty hot on the jewelry and the 11" and 5" coils should take care of the coins, at least it does for me.

I'm not kidding. Tesoro Compadre. It's super sensitive to small gold jewelry and can find coins in trashy places better than most.

It's one detector that I will always have in my detector arsenal. Tesoro Compadre + Garrett Pro Pointer = Kick Butt

IMHO you don't want a detector designed for gold (prospecting) for general detecting or even gold jewelry. Most of the popular, capable models out there will do a good job on jewelry as well as coins and other miscellaneous whereas a dedicated gold detector will respond to even the smallest pieces of foil etc and many don't offer any discrimination.

The 705 is the swiss army knife of detectors for coins and jewelry.

A small ear-ring tag in .925 silver resting on top of my hand with the 10x5" HF Coil.
Hey it actually is designed to go find nuggets,... go figure.

This morning I added a few more coins to my treasure chest using the 5" HF Coil in a very trashy spot.
Small grassy spot by a lake just in front of the summer watering hole. Full of pulltabs new and old, foil, crown caps, etc. etc.
Coin hunters heaven!!

Did I mention I enjoy using this little funky detector.

Al19067,

With the versatility of changing the frequency (by changing the coil) on the X-Terra 705, the machine can be set up to find both of what you are looking for. You can purchase the 3khz coil for those days you want to hunt deep coins and then you have the other end of the spectrum with the 18.75 Khz coil for concentrating on jewelry. Yes, I have a thought. I just got a new Fisher Labs Gold Bug DP. It can be used for both gold and coins. Pretty good selection of coils, too.

I may be missing something, but as one poster said, almost any detector will fill your needs. No reason to get a gold detector unless you will be prospecting for raw gold - It is harder to detect than gold jewelry. A starter detector like the ACE 250 would do fine for a couple hundred dollars new. If you want to search in mineralized soil or go pretty deep you might want to check out some of the lower end mid range detectors that have good auto balancing. IMHO, the 705 would be overkill. You can do what you want to do and do it very well for about 1/2 the money.

I just purchased my 1st detector last year. I picked it up on some very solid advice. Yes it was a bit overkill at first BUT, it will accommodate growth in the sport. Right out of the box you can turn on and go. then through learning and experience you will learn it's capabilities and be quite impressed. In one summer I have learned a lot that it can do. I am now convinced I invested well. I can and will use the 705 for years.
Point: I purchased from a local dealer who offers hands on field training which has been invaluable. At almost any time I can email or txt him with a question and he gives me great tech support.
