I got permission to metal detect this old beach where I grew up on the river and found about 85 cents. I found one 1965 dime just laying within a foot of a quarter. It was all clad, but the best day I've had yet. This doesn't sound like much to the more experienced members of this forum, but it was wonderful for me. I was there at 6:45 am and the place did not open until 8 am. No problem, I found several coins outside the fence. I have learned to get out before the temperature gets too high, otherwise it's too hot in Southern Georgia. When I do get out and it's hot, I try to stay in the shade and this may not be as productive, but it allows me to hunt during hot weather.
The only bad thing is the recreation department built a concrete wall where you used to have a gradual slope into the water and this prevented me from working the shallow areas with my detector. I found all kinds of different pull tabs and had pennies ring up from 6.5 to 8.5 and they are usually in the 7.5 range on my 2500.
I was using my 9.5 proformance coil and I tried the suggestion to let go of the pinpoint button on my detector to determine if the item was worth digging or not, but never heard a sound. I believe if you hear some noise like morse code it's something worth digging. Anyway, all I heard was silence. Some of the tones were coins and some were not. One thing about the 2500, when you scan over a quarter you know it. I hope to get back out there next week and checked out a couple more places I was interested in and made about a 60 mile round trip yesterday. I have a sniper coil and 5 x 10 dd coil being shipped by ups and hope to use them next week. An old church, mill pond and house were on my list yesterday, but I haven't gotten permission to search them yet and hope to in the near future. There are two concrete outhouses at this old church which are no longer being used and I want to check around them for lost coins.
I ordered a couple extra lower stems and screw kits to save time changing out coils and I know that sounds lazy, but it really helps me out a lot. They drew the lake down last fall and I wish I had felt like metal detecting then. I have done more metal detecting this April than I have since I bought my detector. I thank God and my doctors for getting some strength back in me and look forward to more trips like this.
I hope to figure out how to post my photos soon and I'm looking forward to my first ring or jewelry. I know it's out there and I hope to find it.
