Good machine for fresh water

I live in Oklahoma and have a viper trident witch is not the best . It only goes about 3 inches deep . I'm going to be using it in creeks I'm use to running whites dfx and xlt . Could I sink my dfx coil in shallow water? Thanks

You can BUT the minute you raise the coil above the control box you will FRY your DFX. I have already done that to a DFX and I drowned a Spectrum.

Beach Hunter ID, Tigershark, Fisher 1280X or CZ-21 or Excal are your better options for fresh water

Wander why ? You mean after you take it out of the water if you raise it up it will still fry it?

Yep. The hollow shaft fills with water and heads straight to the electronics. :rage:

The AT Pro is another good choice if you are just wading.

The 1280X is a fantastic fresh water machine and can be found cheap. Built like a tank!

I don't know if she is cheap...but what a fantastic machine. An yes...totally built like a tank. hh an gl. -Joe

For the price and light weight of a dual purpose land/water machine, thanks to it's full function LCD screen and being waterproof, just can't forget about the AT Pro. And it'll have less performance issues since it's not being used in salt water, although some guys do rather well with it in the ocean too. For the price and features it's one machine that anybody considering a water detector should probably consider looking at, and as a bonus it makes a fantastic land machine which I hear does rather well in iron without the need to slow down to a crawl with your sweep when you are in the mood to sweep fast.

If you want to get the very best depth possible in even mineralized beaches or salt water environments, then you have to look at the Excalibur of course. But it doesn't make as handy of a backup land machine with no meter, but it does have some great long detailed audio and more tone alerts then the AT Pro, so many people do still use it on land and do well. But, for sure you'd need to put it on a straight shaft you buy or build for land use, and it's a good idea for water hunting too for max comfort.

For using a land machine in the water, drill two holes right above the coil insert on the shaft. Stick a measuring tape down the lower shaft to see where the coil mount insert ends inside the shaft. I like to drill two holes just a hair above that to insure max water drainage. One at the back so it drains naturaly in hunting position, and one at the front in case the back one gets plugged up. Don't make them too big or you could weaken the shaft over time. Even for my water shaft I use when i chest mount my GT to water hunt a bit deeper than my belly button I still drill those holes, because it's a pain to lay the shaft down in your truck and have water come running out, even though when water hunting my control box isn't on the shaft.

I have thought about the at pro but then I heard people say some negs about it. Wander how deep the at pro will get in fresh water gravel ?

A good machine is like a good Ford or Chevy. Some people will swear by them, Others will swear at them. NO machine will make everyone happy that I know of. Some like your Chinese Viper are cheap and very poorly made and others are made like tanks and costs about the same!

I used to have a 1280X and loved it. But got to like the CZ-20's and 21's better. I have heard good and bad about most every detector out there. Part of it boils down to what your used to, what your expecting and the quality and quantity of good finds.

Some on here love their Fishers, others had issues with them and went to Excal's. Some people had issues with Excal's also. Others never tred either and use the Tesoro's, Garrett's, White's or others and learned the machines, took care of them and became quite deadly on learning the signals and what the machine was telling them.

John Edmonton runs the AT- Pro section and he is in Canada in fresh water. You might want to get his input.

I don't know if anybody else can be of more help. Good luck in your choice and LEARN your new toy!!

Newer White's models....... and I can't tell you when White's started this, has a plug in the control box rod or S-rod to prevent the water back flow. On older models, you can make your own plug with silicon sealer. It's cheap insurance against an accident.

The best land and fresh water detector I have ever used is the CTX 3030, an amazing machine.

Yea I would not have bought the viper if I would have had to pay for it . I got it in a deal I made with a Keene dredge . A buddy of mine was wanting to buy a dredge off a guy and dis not know much about them so I came along . He was going to make a trade on it strait across for a cheap 4 wheeler and I had the guy throw the detector in so my buddy just gave it to me. It is a cheapy goes about 3 inches at max .
