Good Karma Brings Me an 1839 Large Cent!

A few weeks back I got a private message from a new V3i user in my region named Rick. He was interested in learning more about the V3i and asked if I would mind if he came along with me one day, as he has not found anything but modern coins. I had some appointments in his area today so I arranged to meet him at his house after work to show him some pointers. I was happily surprised when I pulled into the driveway and saw the shingle in front saying "Farmhouse c. 1768", (although he stated that the house is more likely mid 19th century).

We walked around the yard for a bit talking about my settings and how to interpret the data being displayed. He listened along for a while on his wireless headphones (what a great way to learn!). After digging some trash signals I pointed to a line of large old trees and told him what a great looking spot to detect. We split up and each went to a tree to detect. I got a solid/jumpy 83 reading on my display at a depth of 4 1/2 inches. I was hoping for an old silver SLQ or Barber and dug the plug, calling him over to watch me recover it. He came over and immediately saw it sticking out of the dirt. He was simply amazed, and ran into the house to show his girlfriend.

We did some more detecting and found the usual assortment of buckles and buttons, and I departed with him insisting that I keep the coin.

Below is a picture of the coin, as well as my new metal detecting buddy, Rick. I love this hobby!!!

(The picture of the coin was the last photo I got before the zoom cr@pped out on me ...this is the third camera this happened to. I need to invest in one of the new rugged outdoorsman models now available, so, no post cleaning photos...sorry!)

I can read LIBERTY through the dirt Neil, congratulations. Rick is lucky to have you as his teacher and hunting partner.

Very Nice Neil! Found a great coin and made a new friend and hunting partner. Doesn't get better than that!

Sweet, very nice find!! Wish this areas history went back to the early 1800s,much less the 1700s.

Great find--congratulations! Sounds like you both had a great time. I'll bet Rick's excitement and enthusiasm for detecting increased substantially after a find like that in his own yard. Thanks for posting the story and pictures.

To everyone reading this message...
I met a really nice guy, learned more about my V3i and made a new friend!
After insisting that Neil keep the 1839 cent that he found in my yard, he emailed me saying the coin belongs to its rightful owner.
What a guy!
The coin will be framed and displayed on my wall with an inscription of who found it (Neil).
I must say that hunting for treasure with my V3i is an addiction!
Neil gave me hope that there are still more coins to find in my yard and he is welcome to hunt here any time.

Welcome to the forum Rick.

Welcome Rick. Neil is an excellent person to learn the V3 from!

Man I know that location is important BUT. I just found my first large cent this year. Congratulations and welcome to the forum. Rob

I found a lot of sweet colonial coins this year, but prior to yesterday my last Large Cent was found in July 2009!

Now Neil.......:nopity:, closest most of us (out west here) can have to that is a railroad track penny! Nice coin and sure some good spot is out there with your name on it. My list in pre- Civil War is almost nothing. (We do find more other stuff......but still.):sadwalk:

My standard answer to that comment is that you guys find almost all of the gold coins!
