today i hunted a buddies yard, house is 100 yrs old or better. Got my first ever indian penny spill, 1899, and 1908 in one hole, that was cool! And no the 1908 does NOT have a "S"....darn!

also got a 1886 injun as well!

ended up with 12 wheats, got a few early ones too. 1918, 19, 20, 25, 29, 38, 39, 42, 44, 46, 51, and a no dater.

The find of the day was the cool token I thought it was a large cent when I pulled it from its dirt grave, dated 1908, from Columbus Grove Ohio, that is about 40 miles from where I live.

Got about 2 bucks in clad, some keys, big brass ball..lol

this yard must have been cherry picked for silver at one time, there was pennies everywhere but no silver. I gridded the yard 2 directions, no silver to be found!

Congrat's on the great finds "G", IIIIIII like those Injuns and I can see why you thought that token was a LC when you first got it out of the hole.

Congrats on the very good hunt! The IH spill is very cool! That token would have had me going also. I like it, Beale.

Looks like a good day to me :)

Yep, a good hunt indeed. You should be proud of your loot! I find that is a common belief, that we often think that someone has cherry picked the silver prior to our arrival. I tend to think that a silver or gold coin, because of exactly how shiny the metal is when untarnished, tends to be eyeballed more quickly after a recent drop. Pennies and nickels tend to be more subdued in their luster, and thus the silver coins tend to be recovered more quickly by hand before they get trampled or otherwise pressed into the ground, where we find them with our detectors. Which I think is why most of us know that in order to find the silver, you have to find the older copper and nickels first. In some cases, we might even find silver before we find wheats or anything else. In the cases where I find modern clad quarters and dimes, the grass is longer and the coins have a tendency to remain hidden from view even though they are still on the surface, relatively speaking. In either case, deposits are still being found and being made daily!

it is rare for me to find more than 5-6 wheats in a yard w/o silver. I have talked to many old timers who told me about people who detected yards and disc'd out everything penny and below and dug only silver, so yes I do believe MANY yards have been in fact cherry picked. My silver to wheat ratio for the year is 4.71 to 1 so I am pretty confident when i go to a yard with that many wheats, silver SHOULD be there
