Yesterday (Sunday) we decided to detect the playground and yards of a small primary school near here. After an hour, or so, and doing ok, my wife found a nice white gold 9ct (375) band in the sand play area. As she's showing our 2 children, a couple of other kids who were playing nearby overheard and came over and said that one of their friends had lost a plain silver ring a few days ago. Well, we said we'd check in with the front office Monday and see if anyone had lost one like this.
As much as we'd really like to keep it and add it to our growing collection of silver and gold rings, we knew the right thing to do. We went back this morning and walked into the front office. When I told the two ladies behind the counter what we found, I thought they were gonna come over the counter and kiss me! They were so happy. Seems the mum had already been in there about 30 minutes earlier checking to see if anyone had found it. It was her son's ring which was made up from her father's wedding ring. They had a jeweler make 2 smaller rings from the one, for her 2 sons and they were just devastated when he (against mum's wishes) had worn it to school and lost it. This is a very small community and a very small school, so everyone knew it was lost and everyone was on the lookout for it. It was a really good feeling doing that, although there was just a little bit (very little) of regret that we couldn't keep it.
Today, we went out for about an hour before the kids got out of school and my wife finds a nice old (deep) 18ct gold band and a really unique 925 silver "cat" ring. It appears to have eyes made of iron pyrite? (fools gold) crystals. Hey, no longer any regrets!
She also found a 1931 Penny - sort of a semi-key date and a scarce variation (dropped last "1" in date) in decent shape.
The good always comes back, multiplied!
Cheers,
Toby
