Good and Bad

The good: tonight I found another Indian Head penny (1909), seven more wheats (a few in the teens and 20's), and two silver dimes (both 1945)! My new favourite spot to hunt is wonderful, I'm excited to go back.

The bad: My gtax 550 is acting strange. When I turn it on, it jumps right to 'pinpoint' mode, and goes haywire. I press the 'last mode' button, and it goes back to normal. Then, as I hunt, it keeps jumping back to 'pinpoint' mode. Frustrating to say the least. Anybody else have problems like this?

Sounds like you have a great spot to hunt! I don't know much about your metal detector, but I am sure enough people here can help you out good luck!

Well I changed my batteries, they were almost dead. The problem seems to have gone away. Tonight I dug a 1941 Mercury head so I guess it's still working, but if it happens again I will reset the detector.
Yeah, my 'secret spot' is awesome. My father-in-law is the president of the local golf course here (it's been operational since the late 20's I think), so I have exclusive permission to search anywhere...and it's NEVER been hunted before. It's a goldmine... er make that a silvermine haha, the silver dime tonight makes 27 silvers in 3 months now!

27 silvers in 3 months, that's great. Batteries are the first thing you should check when your detector malfunctions.

I'm such a goof...I had a loose connection where the coil wire connects to the control box. The nut was completely unthreaded, and the wire was barely plugged in. I won't let that happen again DUH!

From the land of the Bluenose...glad you were your own trouble shooter! Now me son git out there and dig some silver and "First Nation" pennies!

Leslie, it's funny that you said "First Nations" pennies. That subject came up while I was showing those pennies to my wife. We figured we should call them "Native Canadian" or "Aborigional" head pennies. I know many Native people, I would hate to offend them.
