Good all around detector?

Hi folks, I'm from North Carolina and have been doing a little gold panning and prospecting around here and Georgia for several years. I really appreciate all the information that you guys so willingly share with everyone. So now....I'm looking for a little specific advise. I want to buy a good all around metal detector because I can only carry one when I travel. I want something I can use here in the mountains, get wet at the beach and use nugget hunting while I'm vacationing out West. I've had a couple of different ones and have had varying degrees of success with each, mostly coin shooting and relic hunting around here. I've had a Compass, Garrett and a Minelab GP. (Gold is just too deep here for the GP and I can't justify letting a detector that expensive sit for a once a year trek to Az or Ca.)
What are your opinions on the Garrett Infinium vs the Minelab Excaliber? I'm figuring on spending around $1,200 bucks.
Thanks! Your input is appreciated and valued.

The Minelab is a VLF thus better disc but is rather limited with the coils I have heard.
The Infinium is a PI thus basic disc but deep in mineralized ground.(compared to a VLF)
Infinium has multiple coils to choose from but also a learning curve comes with it. I have heard they have new coils for better performance now to.

In trash the Excal will be better because of the disc.
In mineralized ground the infinium will be better.
Depth (probably) the infinium will have a edge.
In coil options the infinium will be better.

Hope it helps some. Others might fill in more then I do now.

You might consider the x-70 with 2 or 3 coils......no multi use machine is going to be "best" for everything...but it will do pretty well. Checkout the xterra-70 forum for loads of info.

good luck

For your situtation, take a good, long look at the Whites MXT. Out here on the Left coast, it is the top seller. Primarily because of its ease of operation, coin, jewelry, relic, and prospecting modes. All separate programs geared toward each aspect of hunting. I can detect a 1/2 grain piece of gold with it (in the air) using the stock 9.5" coin loop that comes with it. Add on the 10x5 DD Eclipse loop and you have a potent nugget hunter. It's the best all around machine for someone who wants to do a little of everything. Obviously, if you want the BEST of both worlds, then you have to buy 2 separate machines. The MXT combines the best of those into one. But you loose a little of the finer details of a specialized machine.

please specify what size your expecting on the gold. As fine gold detectors are a whole different thing then you'd need 2 machines or a few smaller coils.

I don't really have any expectation as to the size of gold to be found. I'm looking for the best multipurpose detector I can buy so I have the ability to detect wherever I am at the time, when I have an opportunity. For instance, I am going to Charleston SC soon and would like to beach and water detect. I'm also going to Jamestown California and Yosemite later this summer and would like to hit a couple of the LDMA claims as well as try some fresh water gold detecting/sniping while I'm staying near the Merced River.
Thanks for your help.

I use the Terra 70 down under here in OZ and it eats all the copetition for breakfast as far as VLFs go. In every way possible.
The best coil is the 10x5 elipt 18.75khz and the new 6" 18.75KHZ. The other day for fun as where I wanted to go was bogged out I tried a spot where just small gold was found. I got 13 bits for under half a gram with one being 1/40th. The ground was nuetral pipecaly and it was running flat stick on 30 sens. One bit banged in loud and clear from 2". Has beach mode, prospecting, coins and relics. The use of two types of disc, the one in Prospecting and the other in coin/relic by just hitting the toggle button/pad to cross check, make it a wicked machine amongst the junk. It even makes its own slightly bigger brother the Eureka gold look lame.

What Steve said. Also look into GTI 2500.
would you Md'ing under water? then you'd have a bigger problem with 1 MD. Look into the Infinium LS might be an option.
