GoldQuest SS still finding gold, Love the 10" center mounted coil.

The past five weeks have been really good on gold jewelry, Almost every trip out gave up at least one piece and once dug up three pieces of gold jewelry before noon.

About 40 percent of the finds are made by the Treasure Baron, The remainder from two different Pi's with the GoldQuest SS finding more than the other. About 56 grams total and about 38-40 grams of that are 18K, Very good for detecting late in the season.

I used to feel the larger the coil the better, So the stock 11" coil was used the most. Until about 3 years ago...Through Mr. Bill, I ordered a special made coil from Eric (10" center mounted 10uS coil.) I really believe this is the best coil for underwater use, Not too big or too small. Plus, The center mount eliminates coil flopping and keeps the coil centered and balanced through-out every swing and creates less drag from the water.

Although the coil is only an inch smaller, It's enough to enhance the weaker smaller signals which is as close as it's going to get compared to an VLF detector.

Thanks Gulf hunter,

The 8" coil you have is all the coil you need for underwater or wading in the surf, Too big a coil just isn't worth the hassle from drag or coil flopping.

I went with the 10.5" since I mainly detect fresh water up to my upper chest, Plus it works great for ocean surf...However, the 11" coil is perfect for open areas such as wet sand, coverage and if ground allows about an extra inch depth.

One of my buddies had my coil on his Pi for a couple of years and painted it white, Recently got it back so I'll need to remove the white paint he added on...He felt he could see the coil better with the coil painted white detecting the deeper areas, And he's right :)

Thanks again,
Paul

They should set them all up that way. My Excal is that way and I love it, that is of course after I drilled the hole out bigger and installed a bigger bolt to stabilize it. No more flop! Coil control is vital and if it's flopping around, there's no telling what you're missing!

The 10in centre mount coil is available as an option for all Pulsepower detectors. Also there is a choice of white or black. White is definitely the one to have for searching in water, as it is much more visible. Black has been chosen on occasions for night hunting on beaches, where the detectorist does not want to advertise his presence.

Eric.

Love that design Eric, needs to be standard issue, especially on the GQA2, as the stock 11" is VERY HARD to control in the surf. Was very floppy, until Mr.Bill fitted the 8" on the unit. 8" was easier to control and could be run at 10uS in my area. 11" could not. Never even knew that one was available, looks GREAT! GH

Gulf hunter,

My HH Pi used to have a 15uS center mounted coil, Now my friend has it on his HH Pi. I bought this HH pi from a friend (Terry Crenshaw) a few years ago, Terry added on the 15uS center mounted coil to the HH pi. Since Terry is more of an ocean hunter he needed a coil for wading in the surf.

Since the picture was taken, I've gone back to using the 10uS 10" inch center mounted for my GQ and will be going back to an 11" coil for my HH Pi.

Your 8" coil is a good coil for capturing smaller targets such as earring studs and thin rings down to 0.3 grams and even lighter in some cases, As you noticed you can operate at 10uS most of the time using the 8" coil.

It would have been some time involved before the center mounted coil could be had for instalation at the time you purchased yours.

Nice collection you have there.:surprised:

Thanks,

I forgot to mention, Note the Whites Pi with the Eric Foster 11" DD coil mounted on. It actually works :)

One night I was experimenting and got the DD coil to work on the Whites Pi, The only problem is it may be working as a mono and not as a DD coil.

After talking with Mr. Bill one day, I mentioned what I had done to the Whites pi and apparently the DD coil may be operating as a mono and not a DD....The SMPI is not really set up to accept a DD mod as found on some other Pi's, At least that is what I seen on the Whites board. So I wired it differently and presto it works.

Anyway, It was strange to see the DD working on the SMPI.
