Goldquest question

therover

Well-known member
In reading the manual and specs, it states that the Pulse Delay is 10-50us, TX width 30-150us and TX frequency 10,000pps - 2000pps.

Does the Reject control effect all three ? Meaning, set at minimum reject, the Pulse Delay is 10us, TX width 30 and TX frequency 10,000 and when set at max, the Pulse Delay is 50us, TX width 150us and TX freq 2000 pps, or does the SAT control effect TX width or Frequency ?

Just curious. I want to learn as much as I can about this machine, because I am beginning to like it A LOT.

I believe that the Goldquest alters these settings and timings automatically (and proportionally). I think this is a done by a clock frequency control.
My Goldquest is the "SS" model.

As you adjust the Pulse delay then the other settings are taken care of automatically.
Other PI's (Eric's Deepstar) allow many of the settings to be set individually....this allows users to really hunt for specific items or in certain ground conditions.

The SAT is a separate control. Generally, you can get a bit more depth with a slower SAT as the detector is being given more time to analyze the ground.
"Tougher ground" requires a quicker SAT in order for the threshold to remain stable. Tougher ground = salt saturated/mineralised. You need to advance the SAT (quicken) as you get into wetter salt sand. Generally, I will advance the SAT control before increasing the Pulse Delay.....if the threshold is still too noisy due to salt then increase the pulse delay (REJECT) as this will reduce the audio response from the salt.

I have a Word.doc that describes PI's and how they work. I can send you a copy if you like. It's not too technical and really helps to understand what's going on inside your detector.

Tony,

Thanks for the info. I have an article by Reg Sniff that is really good...is this the same one ? If not, send me a copy of what you have.

I have the GQ SS v2, but I see the new version of the GQ has a gain knob. I guess this can now regulate the sensitivity of the machine ?

My GQ ran smooth on the beaches I used it on last weekend, and as usual whenever I get a new machine, played around with the settings. My intention is to use this machine almost exlusively for awhile so I can understand it and learn it's language/sounds. And I will be digging all targets. After a while, I was pretty good at guessing what the target was going to look like ( not so much if it was iron or not, but whether smooth or long/rough). Was getting it right about 70% of the time. Also, it's pretty easy to determine the small or deepies since this machine does bang pretty hard on the shallower ( 1- 8 inches down ) targets.

I am happy to be part of the PI crowd again.
