Does anyone on here have one of these. If so can you tell me how you like it? Looking for another school park machine.

 Hi, There are two versions of this model. The old version has a round disc with holes for the speaker and the new version has louvers over the speaker. Both have 4 tones but they are different from one another. This unit has been discontinued ( I think)...I have the old version #1 and really like it. I can set it to disc out old pulltabs and zincs and it will still pick up small to medium gold. The only drawback I can see with this unit is the loud repeating beeps when the coil gets too close to a target. It is annoying to a lot of people but I personally like it. I just raise the coil a few inches and the signal singles out. There are some really good videos on youtube that further describe this machine. Hope that helps and maybe Monte or others can chime in too. Happy Hunting, RDF :detecting::tesoro:

What got me wondering about this unit is silver53's video I watched of him just changing the tones. without out nothing or discriminating anything out he was able to make iron grunt up until nickel. but 2 of the gold rings he had that fell in the iron range had a different sound unlike the iron sound. sounded like a duck or goose. Has any body tried to see if this works. If so I would think this is a feature I have yet to see on another detector. I would think this detector would be great for coin jewelry hunting.

I have one and was able to get it to do the same thing as 53 silver.....I like it but it takes a bit to learn it so I don't know it well yet. They are no longer made, but I got a NOS one last year so the warranty is good forever!

I want one to. Keep me posted on how it works for you. Doesn't seem to be many people that know much about this detector. Unless you are on a different forum then there are a few haters that never owned one tell you why you shouldn't buy one. But we won't go there. Lol

I think a lot of people that bought this didn't know how to work just the tone notch width. And so most people never used this to there advantage. Plus it wasn't out long enough. I think a few people are starting to relize how good this machine could be.

I was on a dealers site that still had them listed today....don't know if they didn't update the site or still have some left.....

woodknack, I was able to find one, new, from a dealer after about 30 phone calls. I bought it last April. My Golden uMax is an old tone version ( the tones are in their proper conductive order) and it has the louvers on the face plate, not the holes. This is an awesome machine. It does not have the greatest depth, but quite adequate for parks and school yards. It will easily hit a quarter at five to six inches, perhaps a little more if the ground conditions are just right. For dimes, four to five inches seem to be its maximum. It hits very hard on nickels and aluminum (which means gold as well). The golden uMax separates very well and is a fast recovery machine, allowing you to pinpoint easily.

I put the 7 inch widescan (DD) coil on mine, and that is my main coil now. With a coil that small, you do not cover a lot of ground very quickly but I found the tone separation to be much clearer. 53silver's videos are great, but keep in mind those items are on the surface. There is soooo much stuff, including trash in the ground at a park, and so many varieties of pulltabs, that make it difficult, if not unrealistic, to set the machine up in such a way that you can notch out pulltabs (some yes, but not all) and still hit gold.

I use my uMax withthe notch turned OFF. The strength of this machine is not the notching capability but the tone adjust that you have when the notch is off. The notch width nob serves as a tone adjust with the notch switch off. You can adjust how a pull tab or a nickel will sound. Where I hunt, there is a lot of foil in the ground, I would need to set the disc too high to blank it out completely, instead I turn my tone adjust/notch width nob way down, putting that aluminum foil into the low/iron tone range.

The golden uMax can be set up to give a clear distinctive lower middle tone sound on nickels, I usually call it before I dig it, and 4 out of 5 times when I think it is a nickel it is.
Having said all that, the truth is, I am still learning this machine and cannot wait for the snow and ice to melt so that I can get out there some more and try some different settings.
For the park, I cannot imagine a better machine to devour up all the clad that has been dropped, small gold jewelry in the playground, or the occasional silver coin a few inches down.
Last summer, I was able to get out, on average about two times a week for a 2 or 3 hour hunt, and as you can see from my signature below... I did pretty good.

You will not be disappointed with this detector, and if you get one and don't like it, you will not have any trouble finding a buyer.

Mine has louvers as well but not sure if it is old or new tones. The serial number indicates old tones, but I had the dealer check it before it got shipped and he said the tones were different from the other used machine he had.....so they may have sent this one in back when they were still switching tones on them....he couldn't remember.....

Thanks, that is just how I would set mine to hunt too. No discrim just change the tone with the notch width. I see the potential for this to be a great coin jewlery hunter I like the multi tone. The cortes has multitone but i believe you have to be pushing over the SUM switch to get them. Its not made to stay in that mode as the switch pops back after you release it.

Hello, I just found one after about a year of looking, This one has the newer tone change ID with the newer serial number. (New tone conductivity). I am very very excited about using this machine once again. I had one (OLDER VERSION) a long while ago but when I was on the Navy ship, it somehow walked off. Right when we had a port visit in Guam. I am very anxious to use it now. After watching many video's on YouTube and the many posts and helpful information, I am going to put all of this data to good use and get back in the field. I have 2 other machines from different manufacturers but, like I said this Golden Umax has a unique ability to have it work in your favor. Retired now I will be taking newer (Golden) back to the military beaches to detect in San Diego and Pendleton and excited to take it to some old mining towns now in Nevada. Now I have to find me one of those HAT CAMERA'S and a Orange Pro Pointer.

That great im happy for you. Where did you find other info on this? As im looking for more info to before I drop the ball. I was on another forum but I just got bashed in that tesoro forum for asking about the detector. I've heard more good things about on here then the other place. Wish someone else would make a video.

I just have been doing basic searches on Yahoo, Msn, Google and typing in Golden Umax and adding different information on my internet search plus reading posts from TNET, Finds, Treasure depot and treasure spot plus you tube. I have printed out a lot of posts on usage and been comparing it to other posts on usage from the different forums than I am experimenting with my own findings before I use the machine. Probably a tweek here and there on the machine, then write down your settings try different ones and use the one right for you.

Keep us all posted. Anything new you figure out let us know. I think this is an underrated machine. I just think it would make a great park, school, etc coin jewelry machine.

Can you make the duck goose sound on any metal?
try setting it up this way to try something for me.
disc dial to min
notch switch to middle (off position)
wave a nickel while turning your notch width dial. see if you can make the nickel sound like a duck or goose.
If so try other metals, gold ring, earring, etc.
report back, let us know if you can do this.. Thanks.

Yea I will for sure, I will be busy for a few weeks with military stuff, so when I get a chance I will get it out there and see how much better this newer updated 4th tone is. Last time I used one was in 2011 and I had it for 5 years. So Im totally pumped up about using this one. :)
