Golden umax in my opinion ..........

Hi, I used a Golden umax for about 4 years and then upgraded to a visual ID detector of a different brand costing almost twice as much that I used for about 5 years. I just sold that detector and am going back to the Golden. I seriously found way more of everything with the Golden umax and after using the tone vs. the visual ID I really think the visual makes you lazy and you start to rely on too much info (if that's possible). The other detector was a Whites MXT. Don't get me wrong it found a lot of good stuff but not like my Tesoro. I hear so much about the MXT but why is there such little info on the Golden umax which I have had so much success with. I live in Massachusetts and the lack of ground balance control never stopped me from finding treasures. So before I go back to the Golden, does anyone have any opinions on other detectors. I do want good depth so I can rehunt some of my favorite spots. Thanks for reading. HH.

I own both detectors and usually use the Golden. I like its tone id and light weight. To be fair, I have found good stuff with both detectors. I find the visual ID system very helpful along with the VDI on the MXT and it seems to be fairly accurate. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Most folks don't spend enough time with the MXT to know what it is capable of because it is to noisy for them. I love both detectors... Good luck with your hunt... HH Tony

I have a Golden and a Cortes. The tones make the Golden a nice jewelry detector. But mine drops down to low tone on a 6 inch dime and a 7 inch quarter.I use it strickly for jewelry and is fun to use. The Cortes will ID coins at least 1 inch deeper. Both have Notch setting and will knock out tabs and screw caps and still get ladies gold rings, but not mens or class rings with Notch on. I prefer the Cortes because it has a great meter and it goes deeper.

I agree on relying too much on the TID on that type machine. It is, after all, a machine's best GUESS, not gospel. Nonetheless an easy habit to fall into that can miss the occasional good target.
dig deep, dig often,

I used a G umax for about 6 months, found lots of good stuff and my nickel % when up a bunch. I thought the tonal separation could have been better, and the notch set up wasn't for me. Sold it for a fisher F5(my first fisher), better tonal separation and a nice notch disc, I don't really depend on the visual display much. So far this has been a fun coin and jewelry machine. Still keeping my Vaquero for the relics and beach, I think it will be with me for a long time.

The Golden uMax was my favorite until I got the F5. I still keep and use the Golden but now I only run it with the Cleansweep coil.

I use my Golden on soccer and sport fields. Use lots of descrim so it doesn't go very deep but I get very little trash or zincs.

I called Tesoro to ask Heidi about something and in the conversation I asked her how the sales of the Golden compared to the other models. To my great surprise it is the slowest selling model Tesoro makes ! But I really like it myself and it is an excellent machine. Tones are close together but they sort of roll into each other and is interesting to work with them. It can be a deep seeker if you take your time and listen to what the tones are telling you. Ok good hunting all and be safe.

Was that some time ago? I thought she had left. It would sure be nice if she was back.

Hi all

The Golden is a model that is not exported to Europe.

And, believe me....

That is soOoOoo sad !:ban:

Well there are some interesting thoughts about the Golden. It sounds like its not very popular which makes me wonder how much more great stuff I could find with a different model. I love to dig jewelry and old silver coins. I'm not a relic guy but certainly would be happy to dig some up. So which detector do you all like for jewelry and old silver. I thought I was doing good with the Golden but if there's a better, deeper detector. I'm game. Thanks for the replies. Oddityman

The Golden and all Tesoros are winners but that Tejon is so good it's hard to believe.

With that 5.75 wide scan coil it will kill the coins and jewelry anywhere.

In the right conditions, shallow good stuff amongst trash, my golden with the 5.75 will find stuff that my Etrac misses. It may be different when I get a small coil for the Etrac. But I will never sell my golden.
