Golden UMax against a Minelab X-Terra-70

Stopped at a local park along the way home from work with a guy that I work with and he uses a Minelab X-Terra and I am using my new Golden UMax(less than a week old). We were out in the fields, and around the pavillions and the Golden was just bangin out the quarters and dimes, while the minelab seemed satisfied with pennies and dimes. At the end of about 2 hours, the golden had really done a fine job, with 11 quarters, 5 dimes and 9 pennies. I believe his quarter count was 5 , and he had 3-4 dimes and about 7 or 8 pennies.

This is in no way a scientific comparison, and I aint tryin to say the the Tesoro put a whoopin on the minelab....I am not gonna go there...But I will say that I am very happy with my Golden UMax, I am starting to really get a good grip on the different sounds, and can almost tell from the sound what is what....so that is progress, and progress is good!

I ain't judgin'.....I'm just sayin'!!!!:detecting:

Tesoro Rocks!

I plan to stay in the parks for a while to get used to the machine and learn the tones and it's quirks and then I will try some relic hunting with it, although I dont believe it is "real " deep I plan to move up to the Tejon eventually....but that will be after some time......lots of time, behind the Golden UMax. I really like this machine a lot. I think the Silver UMax is an excellent machine as well, but I do like the tone differences with the golden. Also learning the different discrimination capabilities of the Golden.

Great hobby made even better by equipment that actually works!

I have found some small silver jewelry with the Golden, and only a few nickels. I am still trying to find the sweet spot for the notch...so I can find more nickels and not so many of these............:pulltab:

Both are credible units and appears you were just going over the coins...X-terra is a little deeper and more audio variances on the golden. Would think a Golden and Tejon would make a good 1-2 punch...

You both got about the same amount of pennies and dimes, but you got about 6 more quarters. It does not mean the Golden is better. You just went over more coins.

I think the Golden is a feature improvement over the Silver.

I always wanted to know how well does that digital TID meter on the Golden work?? Thanks!

Did I say anywhere that the Golden was better? Read closely....:nerd:

The golden TID feature works great. It has a learning curve, as with most detectors, and you have to be able to distinguish the different tones. I happen to play some music on the side, so it hasn't been too difficult to discern these different tones. I can see how some folks might have an issue with the two middle tones though as they are relatively close.

The Golden is quite an improvement over the silver, in my opinion. I am pretty new at all of this, but getting started I did put some hours behind a Silver, and it is a great machine, and the more familiar you become with the operation of it, and it's quirks, the more efficient it becomes as a tool for you to find whatever it is you are looking for under the dirt.

The Golden, I have only had for about a week, but in that time I have put about 25 hours behind it, and I can tell you that once you become relatively familiar with it, new doors and methods start opening up, that give you a variety of options that you didn't have with the silver.

In all, they are both great machines....my next one is going to be the Tejon....but all in good time.

OK, thanks very much for the input. I made a mistake I meant the DeLeon when I said a TID meter (screen). Good report!

And it will, too.
I've run several Xterra's and the Golden uMax will outhunt them every time.
They don't like to hear it, so say it with love :cheekkiss:

But yeah, the Golden has a faster response time, does better in iron, better tones, and better discrimination. Better coil selection, better warranty, less falseing, better everything. I liked the xterra concept, but it should have been a Garrett design as Garrett does the multi-notch style better, plus it is their trademark.

What you will find funny and your buddy will not, is that you will always outhunt the Xterra with the Golden.

It is kind of funny, he spends so much time reading his screen, and when I hear the right sound.....I know I have a coin, and I am diggin. I went back to the same park again this evening for a bit, and pulled up another handfull of coins. One thing I have learned already though with these Tesoro's is that when the batteries are fresh....is when these machines really perform like they shoud. Once the batteries are down about half way...I start getting funky signals like a penny, falsing as trash and stuff like that.

I am about ready to order my Tejon, because I want to get some depth and sensitivity. Hunting the parks and the tot lots has it's moment's, but I would really like to get the OLD deep coins and relics, and from what I have dug over the silver umax and the golden Umax, they just dont have the power to get down deep enough to find the "really old stuff". I could be way off base here....but that is my judgement from what I have seen with these machines so far.
