Golden U Max !!

Hi folks,
i never used a Tesoro and have an interest in a Golden U Max. Just wondering if i could get some feedback on overall performance and particularly on tone id and depth. HH Bill

Hi Bill,

I'm a Golden owner/user. I like the machine very much. So does my wife. Most of the places I hunt are relatively new places so I don't really dig deep targets 'cause in these places and in my ground, there are not many. Plus I have other machines I go to when I want to dig deep holes. With the 8.5" widescan coil on it in these areas, 5-6" is about as deep as my targets go, and thats about as deep as I've dug with it.

Someone else will have to respond to the depth question. But, provided your ground and the Golden's ground balance is compatible, you should expect coil size + 2" as a rule of thumb. Less if your ground is more mineralized than the Golden's ground balance.

However, it is really excellent in modern trash, including both alum and steel bottle cap infested areas. Its one of a very few that make a good cruising machine for large spaces as well as focused hunting in small areas. Not many can make that claim. I use it primarily in really trashy spots with a widescan coil.

Its a fun machine. Lite too. My wife and I fight over who is going to use it quite often :)

I can alway recommend a Golden-u :hot:

Hi Mike ! this is John T. out Blackwell way and I just ordered a couple of Golden's for the inventory here at the shop. I have watched your feedback on the Golden and so I thought I had better learn the instrument myself. I like tone ID and I am anxious to play with the Golden. I really don't like all the bells and whistles like VID and I think that is why Tesoro's instruments appeal to me so much. I use the Tejon and Vaquero and simply they get the job done. Ok keep posting about the Golden so we can know of your experiences with this instrument. Many thanks and God Bless.

While Im new to the Golden, Im not new to Tesoro's. I can echo alot of what Mike says, Bill. The Golden is light and easy to swing. It hits good on good targets and sounds crappy on trash. It has all of what the Tesoro mid-line has, plus the added tone-ID features. Id call it a Silver uMax PLUS.

Where I live the GB is good, as there is litttle mineralization. So, I sense that the depth is there, if needed. It just has a quiet strength about it. I have run mine so far at moderate SENS settings and havent felt like Im being hampered. The higer settings and the BOOST is there, too if needed.

Id recommend you get some Koss TD/80's or some other pair of digi-phones, as the audio is full of nuance and those big old Calrad headphones are sort of muted. The tone ID is a sing-songy sort of thing at times and take some getting used to. The best way is to hunt in low DISC at first and dig lots of targets - so hunt where the digging is easy! It is real good for "townie" sites.

See my comparison to a very popular yellow detector below.

Hi John,

I'll have to get it back out. I've been busy with the T2

Whats funny is I had to pack it up and hide it under the bed to keep from us from using it. (the wife likes it too)

Isn't that nuts. You get a machine that you really like and you hide it so you wont use it.

That is a very strange affliction you have there Mike. I wonder if anyone here on the forum can diagnose this type of condition? I tell you what if you will send it to me I will put it to use and you guys won't even miss it, just like it is still under the bed. Aren't I a nice guy Mike?:clapping: I'll CU later my friend.

Bill, The Golden is a fun machine to use. The tone ID is great, don't use notch, but you can take this machine out an just enjoy the day..It has average depth of 6-8 max around here and that could vary from place to place...with a small coil, trashy sites even become fun... Tesoro's warranty is hard to beat also.... Thanks Richardntn

Among the best machines I've owned. I absolutely swore by the Narrow notch on the Dry Sand beach (once I got used to how the detector responded). Once I got familiar with thr machine, it became a gold magnet. Cant wait to get another one!
