Golden Sabre Find

I traded a Whites Classic II and some other stuff for a Golden Sabre Plus a week or so ago. I have wanted to try out a Tesoro since I have tried about all the brands. I wanted one of the inexpensive model without a screen, bacially a couple of tones and some depth. Read a lot about the Bandido and Golden over the years and when the opportunity came up I grabbed it.

I got the open faced 8" and the 7" closed face with the machine. I tried out the 8" a couple of times and was impressed with the disc function. I am also impressed with the PPing of the machine which is about as good as other brands with the detuning feature. Almost don't need a hand help PP its so tight on coins.

Yesterday I put the 7" on, fresh batteries and opened the disc a little bit to hit anything from nickle up. Got a chance to take it out for about 30 minutes before dark. hit a few 3-4" aluminum nails, a pull tabs and penny pretty hard. then I got a very weak repeatable high tone. I knew it was over 5" as the even the AM mode was pretty weak. I was hoping for a silver as this is a 1927 house. So I took my time digging around it.

I got down about 5" and my hand help beeped on something. I dug some more soil loose and reashed my hand down in to grab a hand full on dirt. The object was in the dirt but I couldn't see anything like a coin in it. I swept the PP around my hand and found the object. Couldn't figure out what it could be at first as it was smaller then a dime but definately some type of coin.

I cleaned a little dirt off and seen words on it. Oh Boy it has to be a 1/2 dime but how did a mid 1800s dime get there? I took it into the house and handed to my wife as I put my machine and tools away. My wife wiped off a little more dirt and said its says dime on it. Man it has to be a half dime. I did a little happy dance then heard the words.....PLAY MONEY....what ??

I cleaned it off in the sink and looked at it under the 20x loops. Sure enough there were the words one dime and play money. Then I seen the Uncle Sams Money and 1965. turns out to be a token coin from an Unle Sams Toy cash register. Not a 1/2 dime but cool all the same. heres a picture of the token besde a clad dime. you can see why I thought I found a old half dime. BTW, loving the Golden plus so far and can't wait to hit some other real old sites with it.

newer brown coil? Of the two, and I've owned a lot of them, the white coils seemed to not just be lighter, but probably 9 out of 10 seemed to get a slight edge in depth. Also, is the 7" a concentric or wide-scan design? The 7" concentric was, and is, a favorite of mine for use on most Tesoro's.

While not a 'token' in the sense of a trade token, 'Play Money' is still find to find because a lot of it was around and played with in silver-production times. I popped two about a year ago out near a central Oregon school. They sure had me going for a while as well.

I have found about 4 of those play money coins. One was even in my own yard.
Enjoy the Golden. I have a Golden Sabre II and it works real well for me.

Thanks Billz and hello Monte. The 8" is the Original white coil. The 7" is the Tesoro Concentric Discriminator. He said he also has a 8 or 9" pancake coil. Any information on that one. Do you think its gives the machine more depth? Also, are there any other coils for this machine that would give it a little more depth. Most of the clad I have dug here has been 4-5" deep. I dug a 2007 zinc that was in the 5" range. But did come across a 41 wheat that was only 3" by a garage built about 6 years ago. Coins just seem to be reallt deep here.

Two good coils for sure. The 7" concentric is the coil that has served me the best on my favorite Tesoro models, such as the Inca, Royal Sabre, Eldorado (both original and the

Thanks for the information Monte. I can tell already the Golden Plus is going to be one heck of a jewelry/coin machine. Found two wheat's so far with it at about 4/5", 1941 and 44 and that tiny Uncle Sam token. So there should be some silver around these 1927 houses. Problem is what you mentioned, good target volume tails off really fast. With real volume control on the Golden and my head set all the way up how can you increase the volume?

The only other feature I personally would like to have on this machine is a 3 tone target ID. Sorry, I ain't one that usually digs it all with the limited time I have to hunt. I realize I would get more bang for the buck digging everything and giving up that easy clad/silver for a possible nice piece of gold or a ring. At other sites like parks and other old houses the tone will work great with disc set up. But both the houses here have just Had new roofs and siding on. Those darn aluminum nails and pieces are right up there with penny. If I disc up to much to locate what silver coins might be here, I loose allot of depth. But for the price, I really like this machine and have a lot to learn about it.
