Golden getting it done

I just got a Fisher F5 and tonight a took it to an elementary school for my 3rd hunt with it. Well, it would have been my 3rd hunt. But the EMI from the AC and wireless in the buildings basically rendered the F5 unusable.

So I went back to the van and grabbed my Golden. I was in a digging mood and got busy recovering some clad and a mountain of zinc and can-slaw. I got a raspy nickel hit that I thought would be more can-slaw and up came a 10k gold ring with a stone:

Yeah, the Golden really was rubbing it in. I'll swing the F5, but it will always need a more reliable detector to back it up.

Thats really good , and that kinda small ring is exactly what so many pass because they will not dig foil & tabs and slaw. I know when i am finding slaw and tabs I am in a good spot

nice ring ,it looks like a ruby or amethyst .Is that diamond chips on the sides I can not tell from the photo.

I am not sure what the stone is though it is roughly heart shaped. Shaped like it is, I would go with amethyst. Sadly there aren't any diamonds, chips or otherwise.

The Golden was making an uneven, raspy tone with it - I expected something with irregular edges (can slaw chunk) and was a litte surprised to see the sparkle of the gold band on the edge of the plug.

Thanks! The Golden was at no notch, sensitivity at 8, discim just a touch above iron, and using the factory coil.

The F5, in the event that you were asking after it's settings, was discrim 15 (goodbye, iron), gain at 65, threshold started at -3 and I had to keep dialing it down and gave up when it was still getting EMI at -7. Ground balance was around 55 (cannot remember, exactly, except that it was close to normal which seems to be 58 or so).

You probably already know this. Set your discrimination as low as it can go and use the 'notch width control knob (with the notch width switch in the off position) to set where you exactly want the iron tone to break between foil and iron. Using minimum discrimination, nickels will hit harder and so will gold rings. Do some experimenting and testing. Once you decide where you want it set, put a mark on the notch width control knob faceplate.

You are saying that the notch width dial has an effect while hunting without notch on? If so, no, I was unaware of this.

Good thing I keep it at the 2 o'clock position almost all the time - I'd be annoyed if it were hurting me.

I'm setting my width control knob at the 2:00 o'clock position so a foil cap will break between the iron tone and nickel tone (gold tone) on my new tone Golden

You know, I probably read something you wrote and knew to keep it around 2 o'clock without really knowing why.

I watched the 53silver vid and now I know why - and also know that I need to find the right break-point for my machine.

In the interest of fairness, I thought that I should mention that I was at a site today where the Deleon's screen was rolling numbers like a slot machine and meanwhile I was able to tune the F5 to largely ignore it. The Golden was unbothered, though you could hear it chattering in all metal.

Great post Top! Great replies and Beauty Ring! :clapping: Its good to have an arsenal of gear for as many situations out there as possible. This is a big World, coils are so small, hunting time is short, good job!
