Good to see you posting, Monte.
Every now and then, Tesoro will do a "nugget hunt" with a non-gold detector, mostly as a stunt to prove it can be done. They will write it up and it will look pretty good, but as Monte indicates it is by no means definitive. Nor should it be taken as more than informative hype.
Naturally ocurring gold is something of a paradox. It isn't rare, geologically speaking, yet is typically found in small quantities, randomly scattered. Most of the easy, surface pickings are gone now, even in remote areas like Alaska. Being soft, pure gold erodes quickly, turning to flake and powder. This is especially so where water is, or has been, at work on it.
In fact, find natural gold, and you can invariably trace that find to the actions of water upon it. However, juicy nuggets are the oddities, as Monte suggests. They are found, but it is a random occurrence.
If you live in a city and detecting for gold stikes your fancy, you will be far more productive if you learn to properly hunt for gold JEWELRY.
It exists in greater abundance and it's location is predictable - two factors in it's favor. It still requires a disciplined hunt style to find, but your chances of success are better.
