Gold......

EOS

Member
Was out mountain climbing when I discovered a big amount of black rocks in the canyon.I picked up a rock, turned it over and on the other side it had something looked like gold.I thought first it might be pyrite, copper pyrite or something similar.
Im no expert even though I have been interested in geology. Then I searched around and found more rocks filled with this golden mineral.Well I then started to build up a imagination that this rock I holding in my hand is actually filled with gold...

I could feel my heart start to race. I went back home on the long track to the cottage,my backpack heavy with all the rocks I collected.

Finally back home I checked the rocks with the XT705 in prospecting mode and it gave off a high tone. Was a good signal even on coin mode, low but good.
I compared other rocks containing copper/pyrite and other ore without any reaction on the Xterra.

Now I have to take a close look on this rocks.I will let you know what it is when I get the result from experts in mineral.

Given the weight of gold, weight of your "rocks" might give you a better idea whether it is or isn't.
Let us know what you find out. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Good luck Mike!

Cool finds-definate potential.
Get an ufinished tile (dull) and do a streak test. Gold always leaves a gold streak. (*can use the underside of the toilet tank cover )

Very cool!

Could also be copper or silver. What TID number showed up on your X-Terra 705.??

Let us know what the experts and/or assay says.

Thanks guys for all the good advices!
Tried the tile, it leaves a gold streak. And testing it with the propointer
it gives a good screaming noice.

On Xterra 705, the "rock" comes in at -2,-4.
First thought was this is copper or maybe silver. But tried it on
other bits of copper ore and the terra doesnt react on those samples.

Havent had time yet to consult an expertis. But I will asap.
If I get an positive answer I have to claim it if possible.

Scrape off a small piece in a inconspicuous area and put it between some tweezers. If you can squish it around you probably have gold. It's very soft and maluable. Just about every other type of mineral (fools gold) will shatter or crumble. If you have a spot like that do not tell anyone until you have retrieved every last bit. Just be careful there are pirates everywhere.

Test kits are also fairly inexpensive and easy to use.

A gold rock that size would make my 705 give at least a 20 reading. I just found a 2 3/4 oz nugget a few weeks ago and it gave me a 20 reading.

2-3/4 oz......congratulations. At $1600 an oz I would have to sit on one hand to keep from clapping :clapping:

Good luck, hope it

Thanks again for tips and advices!
And Steve, Im happy for you finding that size of a nugget.Congrat.

Well I might take it to a pawn shop. But first I will try the tweezer trick.
The acid kit can come in handy as well.

Gold streak DEFINITELY warrants further testing.
Don't worry about the TID from the 705---probably just picking up impurities.
And do be aware that gold specimens USUALLY carry a premium price over melt value.

Yes I know it needs more testing. And as you say, since its not a goldnugget it will give a lower signal when mixed with
other minerals or rock type.
One Minelab moderator had a nugget worth 3000$.
His wife melted it down and made jewelery for her without his knowledge.
Can I tell you he was devasteted...haha

Also at -2 and -4 it could maybe also be Platinum or a Platinum group mineral because Platinum has a very low TID number, being lower than gold. Also I heard very small-tiny gold sometimes can hit -2 on an X-Terra 70(5). So a very small amount of gold in your specimen may hit -2.

Do not feel bad, I found a 79 gram(~2.55 oz) nugget 11 years ago(2001) and later sold it way too cheap below spot price at a lower gold price than today. I did even a dumber move having hardrock gold specimens(that I hand chiseled out) crushed to pour a bar of about 12 oz only getting about $5080 for it. Today it would be worth about $19,000 in gold value alone and much more in specimen and crystal gold value. Stupid moves by me that I regret to learn from my mistakes.
