Gold with Tids...for your amusement only!...discuss...

I went out today again with nothing of merit to report...but I did do this when I got home that was sort of fun...We all know air tests are not the same as dirt, but this may give a person an idea or two...Funny thing was the large 18k white gold ring TID...I woulda thought it would read higher on account of its mass and K rating? Nope! Right there solid in Sta-tab city! The big chain is a nonsense kind of signal, depending on its layout, its all over the board, rig must only be reading one link at a time...

All the tabs out there, and all the can shards and foil right in our wheelhouse of gold signals!

F70 w/11"dd... Set up was 1 disc, 50sens, -2thresh, DP tones, no notch...signals held for @7" with this setting, very solid at 4"..
I remember some rings from days gone by...tids all over the place, from 23 on up...doesnt seem to have anything to do with weight or K..larger circumference seems to dictate a higher TID more than those do....

About the only 'standard' sized gold rings out there are class rings from the 60's-70's...womens are at 37 and mens are in zinc it seems...I believe a guy has to concede inland gold is a numbers game coupled with location...Thoughts?

I'm gonna try some alternate coil manipulation techniques over a tab and ring to try to discern a slight audio difference, but I dont think theres really any way a guy can know for sure until popping a target...

thanks for posting thats a good reminder that gold can read all over the place and usually gives a odd kind of tid. my last gold ring i found was only a little over 1 gram and read 22 on the f75 the largest gold ring i found was a 20 gram class ring and read in the zinc penny range hh

I'd sure like to think so Mud since the only gold I seem to find is the one on the better halves finger. The elliptical says it's a 24 no matter which finger she is pointing at me:angry: ----------------IB

Hi, while we tend to think of gold jewellery as gold (unless it is 24k) it is not....it is gold amalgamated with other metals...these other metals (and numerous metals are combined with gold to make jewellery) also affect the reading we get on, and the reaction we get from our metal detector. e.g. a 14k yellow band may have gold, silver and copper...so the silver and copper will raise the amalgamated combination of the metals up the scale of our detector, than if the ring was 24k, because silver and copper are higher than gold on a conductivity scale. If a 14k ring is white gold, added into the mix will be nickel, (amongst other possible metals) to give the ring its "white" effect. Nickel is much lower on the conductivity scale than copper and silver, so the white ring will give a lower reading etc on our detector than the yellow gold ring of the same karat and weight. Keep in mind that the amounts of metal used are measure by weight, so if a ring is made up of three different metals in equal parts by weight, the least part by volume will be gold, because it is the heaviest. Just something to keep in mind when we a pondering such issues. I have only mentioned a few of the different metals that are sometimes used in making gold jewellery...sometimes iron can be used to produce a certain colour effect.

To add to the discussion here are some of my gold finds all tested with the F2, a few with the F70.
The numbers on my F2 are about 1 off of my F70 so these should be good enough for comparison.
Not all are here, I have to take an updated family pic with all of them sometime.

That comment about white gold is more than true.
I have found larger white gold rings that came in way lower than smaller yellow gold types.
When it comes to gold there are no rules.
The ninja of all metals and all are masters of disguise.

Yep, Jake, or else default to digging for LARGE gold kind of tids and letting the rest go by...good strategy there too..one big gold makes up for a lot of little ones...Reviers pics and tids are worth studying to pursue this strategy..

Interesting, I'm looking at a new detector soon and I would like to focus on jewelry. Our clad is plated steel as well. what machine would be a better choice f2 or f? Or should I just stick with a tone machine. I noticed that the tid # don't move or move much.
Thanks for advice !

Anything you learn well will work.
More than half of those targets were found with the F2.
1.5 years in and the F70 has found me 8 so far and for 10 months I experimented more than hunted.

I use Tesoros and that works great, using my Fishers it is a bit easier to find jewelry in heavy trash.

Both types are fun in different ways.

Yes I do want to hunt trashy places because Thant where the most people were and most other hunters avoid trash. Would you recommend f2 f 4 or f5?

I already have a compadre !

I agree, you dont need a top shelf rig to find gold jewelry, you do have to have the addiction though!.....theres lots to choose from in this realm, so try to get one you are comfortable with, trust, and understand what its saying, then focus on finding gold...everything else of any value is deemed bycatch for gold hunters, and pays the gas to go hunt gold everyday...its a real bad deal though....months of coil time and lots of trash with no guarantee...you WILL of course find it eventually, and may even develop a reproduceable pattern to finding it above the norm.....REVIER has, and has generously shared his settings and hunts to us all...!..

Study those pics and read a lot of posts by the hunters that are addicted to finding gold...:clapping:....If it gives you any hope, following a lot of posts, generally ALL dedicated gold jewelry hunters find some every year...some years are just better than others though..looking back, most heavy silver hunters find it as well, 'cause they know their gear and dig a lot of targets...set a goal and go after it! Dancer set a goal last year for a 500 nickel season, and found gold along the way...

Gold is a cruel Mistress, time and gold wait for nobody!:clapping: Even if I didnt have a detector, I'd go out everyday Eyeballing parking lots for gold! You know what? I have no doubt I'd find it too! Thats how bad gold fever is for certain people...:sadwalk:..

Funny thing I just remembered...

I think Tom-in-CA posed this question a few years back: "In a standard sized urban park, with sportsfields and picnic areas, that has seen some traffic from the 60's on up, still heavy with old time and newer pulltabs, foil and clad, but swept clean of deep old silver, how many gold rings are in there?" Or Something to that effect,

All the Gold hunting addicts replied, 'at least 6!' I'll never forget that!:lmfao: So now, when I get into such a place, full of oldish 60's vintage tabs and crap, I am reminded of his post along with this old punchline... " With all this crap, There's gotta be a Pony in here somewhere!":lmfao: So a guy focuses up on what the dirt is telling him, which is:...'Nobody pounded this place for GOLD!':clapping:

The F2 and F4 are so close I never recommend the F4.
Sure it has manual GB, but only in all metal and in good soil that isn't all that important.
The large DD can be used on both so that is a wash.
Hunting in heavy trash a sniper is what you want to use anyway.
That plus learn your detector well, and also learn how jewelry behaves in the wild...especially gold.

Jewelry can be deep but I have never found any silver jewelry past 5-6"...usually less.
No gold much past 5" either...usually way less.

You can get an F5, an F70 like I now use or an F75 or anything else.
The extra settings are nice to have but in my opinion those are more important for hunting other special sites like heavy iron, high mineralization or going deep.
For relatively shallow jewelry hunting in heavy trash all that is needed is a sniper, a decent detector hopefully with good target separation and rapid recovery ability and knowledge.
My Compadre, Vaq, F2 and F70 all fit that bill perfectly well, the small coils I use for this purpose make them potent weapons in the war against trash.
The knowledge came from hours of study, experimentation and putting it all to practical use in the field.

I'm thinking the f2 would be good , thanks for all the wisdom. Now just to see where sta tabs come in at ......

How bout the gold bug pro ?,
looks like the f19?

Gold bug pro, F19 is a updated GBP, back light, full audio with higher disc, 20 or less movable segment notch good for knocking out tabs if the user feels the need or any other trash that is prevailing in any given site.

F19 nice machine.

gee I am rhyming again

the other brand talked about finds gold and for me one of the reasons is there is no screen to consult.

looking for gold mmmmm 6 per site sounds good to me, for me its about turning my emotions off when gold park hunting it can get discouraging junk after junk target , but I also believe like anything in life if we work hard at we get rewarded , well at least I hope so

it's a brain training thing I call it robot mode , but call it what you will, most people don't have it that's why the gold is still there it can be a bit tedious and more relief than excitement with that ring pops out and it will :yikes:

I really don't have to worry about people sniping my tab filled parks and that's a good thing :clapping:

having said all that it's still fun !!

I hear you there 5x5 AJ! Gold is so fickle! It can be anywhere from a beach to a totlot, along side a parking lot, sidewalk, snow pile... Sure we all try to use a bit of strategic thought, hit the likely 'high percentage' places, and try to avoid the low percentage ones...focus up and pay attention to what the scrap is telling us about the demographics of this place and all, but sometimes it really boils down to just getting in 'robot mode' and running lotsa targets..and of course, LUCK!

Folks do get discouraged hunting gold on account of all the junk like you mentioned, but gold addicts think, 'Cool! I'm on the right signals in the right kind of area, and no gold hunter woulda missed this tab!" If all a guy did was dig foil, nickels and tabs, sooner or later, one of them will be gold!:clapping:

I like 'robot mode' too...its an aquired skill, switching the brain into neutral and not thinking about anything in particular....developed by doing repetitive motions for hours like working in a factory, going to church a lot, or pulling crab pots! :lmfao: Applied to this Sport, it comes in handy and time just flies! Hunting gold is a fools errand probably, if it wernt for those times it shows up!:yikes:
Mud

well said Mud :poke: you know I just love this icon :poke: makes me laugh.

yes good to keep each other encouraged to keep the "robot" mode in order :lmfao:

my mate thinks I am nuts but I don't care, its just a different way to detect, and really we are in on the ground floor getting the gold, as the easy stuff dry's up and people start to realise if they don't dig junk its all over, so what do they do then? sell the gear or join the gold diggers , most will sell up or find another hobby

so keep up the good work, its out there I have seen it :pulltab:

I had a giggle to myself the other day I found a blue tab in amongst all the silver ones and got a buzz out of it so its still fun and seeing how the tabs can bend and full beaver tails like they come off the can in perfect condition at 4 or 5" amazing. :jump:

made myself a set of AJ headphones to go hunt tabs and shinny yellow stuff..... post pic's latter

so it pays to be a bit :ranting:

better stop or everyone else will know as well

Mud

Discouraged....never!
I had that part of my brain that experiences that particular feeling taken out right before I dug my first hole.
Some say the common sense part came out too but I think that's just silly.

yeah who needs common sense when looking for gold , probably wouldn't do it if I had any

so its hosing down so I built a set of AJ's yet to be used, rain will be gone tomorrow so I can get out and get dirty :poke: take the F19 no one will see me
