Gold??? What is that??

For the past almost three months I have had to look at the finds posted on the forum to be able to remember what gold looks like.

I have made 19 trips to the beach since I last found a gold ring. I detect a minimum of 6 hours during each trip. So If my calculations are correct I have invested approximately 120 hours searching for that elusive stuff. I have dug lots of clad, a few pieces of sterling silver and plenty of junk jewelry but Gold has been running and hiding when it hears me start the vehicle to go to the beach.

Now if the weather would cooperate and move some of that sand maybe my luck would improve. At least the weather is starting to improve as it is not so hot that one has to leave the beach shortly after noon.

I can relate george..i made my annual beach trip last week and swung my arm off.try as might no gold except for the one another fellow detectorist found a short distance down the beach from me...probably the most frustrating part is watching people walk past me on their way into the water for a dip many wearing several pieces of what looks like gold but none of them seem to be loosing it.. good news is i predict the next time you find gold it will probably be more than one piece...feast or famine right...

I went there this year. Had a gold ring in February, then went all the way to august before my next gold, granted I stopped hunting in March and didn't start again until July. I found two nice gold rings in quick succession, you probably saw the post, one was a fat 18k that I'm staring at as I type this. Bootyhoundpa nailed it, feast or famine and I got to feast. You've got your day coming, it's the laws of metal detecting, you'll get gold again and it'll be a nice one.

We feel your pain here in FL George. One 14K to show this year. All the MD'ers here have the same lament. Agree that we need some weather, not a hurricane, but a nice 3 day nor'easter would help. This year has been particularly slow and I have been skunked more this year than I ever have in the past. I try to encourage all those folks loaded with gold bling to lather up with sunscreen and enjoy the surf!

Hang in there George, it will come. Hopefully a nice storm to stir up some treasures. I know if I depended on the Ocean finds this year things would be bleak.

That second paragraph started out like a confession lol. Its tuff out there no doubt we all are having a lot of empty pouches this year. We are getting a lot of rain this year that keeps the people off the beach. Its odd ive not seen as many hunters this year and the beaches are still fairly crowdy and they are in the water. Just doesnt seem as much is getting lost either and the fact is with all the sanded in conditions not a lot of anything out there but recent drops.

Really tough out there now. Haven't scored a goldie since last month, even after Labor Day it was zippo....Took the DF out this morning for 4 hours hoping to get down where the good stuff might be hiding, scooped up a lure, some deep bottle caps, 16 cents,( a shiny dime, crusty nickel and penny) and a ring. Only problem...the ring was stuck to the scoop magnet.

I know what you are going through. I only have 90 hours in the water without any gold. UNBELIEVABLE!
The sand and I don't know what else is causing the phenomenon but I can't wait for Dave Jones
to open his locker again. Either that or I will have to go and invade some other area, off Cape.
So bad here, I did not even see the groups that usually hit the Cape hard after Labor Day. That
is not to say there were not here, just that I did not see them.

If it were not but for the calls I get to go and find a lost ring or something else, I'd go crazy!
This morning's hunt did yield 2 silver dimes and a silver quarter, so thin that only have one side.
At least I can't see through them. Better days are yet to come...

George,

When this happens to me I switch tactics.
I assume that the locals I usually detect are
over hunted. I counter my walking for miles...sometimes 3 miles
one way before even turning on my machine.
For instance, when I go to Hunting Island I select
a spot using Google map (satellite version) far from
any convenient parking place and slowly grid search after arriving.
Five of my seven gold rings this year came from an area impossible
to reach by car without some kind of gate pass. Remember, the beach is public property.

I tried that walking the beach thing down at Kiawah. 2 1/2 miles one way. Worked and worked and worked and came home with 42 cents. I am just having a frustrating dry spell and the beaches are flat so I will just have to wait till the ocean moves some of that sand back down to where he gold is hiding.
