Gold wedding ring

I detected a fairly new park today just for practice with my new mxt. I found a lot of pull tabs, a lot of foil, and a few coins. After about an hour, a man that lived next to the park came over and told me that his daughter in law lost a very valuable wedding ring 2 months ago while playing softball. She was in the outfield, so she covered a lot of ground. I would love to find that ring and return it to him.
The ground was reading 59, and there are a lot of pull tabs there. What VDI should I look for? Should I turn the gain down, since the ring has got to be on the surface? Any advice would be great. Thank you.

Craig,
Find out the general size of the band and then find a similar ring, ground balance and lock, then read it.
I will be posting a $5,500.00 ring I found for a couple in a week or so once I get a picture of the ring.
If it is a small band then readings could be anywhere from 8 - 20 VDI. Most wedding bands will read in the 18-20 VDI range. The large double banded "heavy" gold ring I found surprized me. It read 18 VDI and was 3 inches deep in mudd. She had a small hand so the diameter of that ring was relatively small. I thought it would read in the high 20's.
If you are using the stock 950 coil then I would use disc at preset, gain on 8-9, and make slow large sweeps.
Just because she "thinks" it's in the ball field doesn't mean it is. If the ring is on her left hand then which hand does she wear the glove? which had does she throw with, etc. etc. So ask her where does she take her glove off. On the way off the field? Once she reaches the sideline? Or when she sits on the bench? Wouldn't hurt to have her check the fingers of that glove as well. <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">
Good luck and hope you find it.

I would cut the gain down to about 6. run your disc at 2 use coin mode and depending on the size it is hard to say about the vdi. I found a couple mens wedding band that came in at 22, yep the same as all them tabs do, or a lot of them anyway.Due to mowing and the activities in that field the rind may or may not be on top of the ground. A bigger coil than the stock would help cover more ground. Good luck.
