In preparation for the "lowering of the lakes" in my area, I thought I would sample a variety of my gold finds w/ the Excel. I hope to do a lot of exposed beach shoreline hunting, as well as some light duty wading. Rather that lug along one of my underwater machines, the lightweight Excel will be perfect for making the several mile hikes.
If you plan on doing the same, then for God's sake wear a PFD if you don't know how to swim. Even if you do know how to swim, and are going to be in a remote location, out near evening(darkness), or possibly near fast current, wear a PFD! They make light weight ones for water skiing etc. They may not be USCFG approved, but at least they are something. Hypothermia, I always wear a shortie lightweight wetsuit no matter how hot the weather is, protects from sunburn, keeps you warm in cold current areas. If it is in cold rain, I wear the light wetsuit & a hooded floatcoat over that, the floatcoat can act as a PFD and keep you warm. A lake or river will kill you just as fast as the ocean, and maybe even more dangerous because it doesn't look as challenging. Having come close to drowning several times in my life, now when I look at a piece of water, and have any nagging doubts in the back of my mind, I simply back away. Close brushes w/ eternity bring wisdom!
I hope the target responses will provide some insight for you gold seekers using the Excel, how it would relate to the C$ target #'s I know not.
