Gold Stinger not sure if its working HELP!!!

I got a used Gold Stinger last year and have used it for about 15 hours looking for coins and for prospecting. I am new to metal detecting and have not had much success with this complicated machine. I am sure that I am ground balancing it in all metal mode correctly but here are my problems/questions. The coil is unbelievably sensitive to bumps, even touching a twig, acorn ever so slightly will cause it to beep,or if I touch or squeeze the coil, it buzzes, is this normal? If I put the coil under water/into a river, the volume jumps very loud, decreases as soon as its removed from water. I taped about 8 grains/4 small placer nuggets, it will find them on the surface but cant find it after I bury them 1 inch. If you have any experence with the Scorpion Gold Stinger please pass on some experience/advice, I'm stumped and not even sure if this thing is defective.
