I was experimenting with my CTX and came across this scenario that has me a bit surprised and wondering how the EQ does.
I put a board on top of a plastic trash can and set a gold ring (12-06) on top of the board. I scanned the coil over it while I brought a tent stake (33-49) down towards the coil. What happens is that the ID begins to shift to the tent stake ID the closer you get. You can have discrimination enabled but the same thing occurs - it just goes silent when the target icon drops under the grey area.
So to me this means if the soil or nearby trash is larger/stronger than your gold target it will shift the CTX ID towards whatever is strongest under the coil.
You can set up a disc pattern for your favorite gold ring you want to find and the soil or nearby targets will shift its ID so you won't hear it or at least won't identify it as a gold ring.
I tried it with a quarter and nickel and zinc penny and saw the same effect. I tried Ferrous/Coin and Ground/Coin etc. no difference.
I was expecting to see the pinpoint show two separate targets but they have to be pretty far apart to be able to ID them correctly in pinpoint.
Now I wonder what really happens to the target ID of a ring when in black sand - and how that EQ does.
