Gold ring time!:clapping:

This last weekend MontanaMatt and I went to another town to meet montanagold for a hunt. What a gracious host he was and allowed us to tag along to a hunt at a place that has been dubbed "the barber shop"(Explorer forum reference). We got to the site and met ringmaster Tim. Well metal detecting is a lot like fishing, as far a success goes. None of us found any barbers, but montanagold got a couple of mercs. There are a lot of old shotgun shell in this place, and I had been digging my fair share of them. I only managed to find 4 coins, but none of them were keepers. Digging a bunch of "iffy" signal dig pay off though. I got a signal that was jumping between penny and nickel and pulltab, similar to the way the shotgun shells were ringing. Dug my plug and busted it apart and there was the side of a ring. After getting it out of the dirt and wiping it off a bit, I could see a 10k mark and a very large stone.:yo: Cleaned it up a bit and it is a nice sized mens ring and has a big red something in it. Unfortunately it is cracked, which makes me suspect that it is glass, but I don't know. This is now grazing pasture but was once a park, so it is probably pretty old, about the beginning of the 1900s. No silver but did score another gold ring, woohoo! Thanks for looking

FUN TIMES, GREAT FINDS...............:clapping:..............

Sounds like a great place to hunt! Nice piece of gold there. HH, Nancy

Gold is gold. Nice find. Rob

VERY nice find Johnny. It is unlikely that the stone is glass mounted the way it is, and seldom is glass mounted in gold. The fracture is not like that of glass either. I think that one deserves a trip to the jeweler for a better guess. My best guess is a red Spinel, often used as a cost effective Ruby substitute. Congratulations again.

Here is a few pics of the stone. It is a purpilish shade of red. Thankyou all for your feedback, will have to have it checked by a jeweler eventually.
HH,
Jon

After seeing the better pictures, we can rule out spinel which is often a clear stone. You may very well have a real lower grade ruby there Jon. Keep us posted.

It was great getting out and meeting other metal detectorist and was very nice of Montanagold to allow us to come along with him and ringmaster Tim. I dug an incredible amount of shotgun shells which have a very juicy signal at around 15-20 VDI. I dug everyone of them because I didn't want to miss anything. It was a beautiful day and although I didn't find anything in the ground I did find a couple of cool metal detectorists. Nice score on the ring jcooking.

It was a pleasure having you guys down, and you guys will have to come back again. It just happened to be one of those days, sometimes I pull out 4 Barbers and some days nothing I ended up with 2 Mercs both 1920 1 d and 1 s and about 5 Wheat pennies. So John you definitely took the best find of the day Congrats. We will definitely have to do it again, I know there are plenty of coins left out there I am up to my 15Th Barber dime so far from there, so there's got to be more.

Very nice pictures of the stone. It has to be some type of gemstone. I can't say if it's a ruby or not. With it's mounting it must have meant something special to someone. And with the stamp of the gold purity, it must have been shortly after the early 1900's when it was law to mark gold. Sure is a cool find! Please let us know if you find out anything about it. HH to all, Nancy

Took the ring to the jeweler today and had him take a look at it. Even before he looked at it through the scope, he said it looked like glass. After inspection he said it was a double "something" mount. I forget what he called it, but it was using a large glass stone, and then gluing a real stone on top of it. :thumbdown:On the close up pic of the top of the ring, you can see an inner circle where clear and kinda fuzzy connect. Not what I was hoping for, but a gold ring none the less. Maybe next time!
