gold ring question....????

New member
Went back to a lot here in podunk where I find some oldies last summer. Basically no place else to hunt so I thought I'd try and squeak some more out of it and stumbled onto a gold ring while chasing the ol nickel signal. Ring says WH10K inside...???? At first I thought it was plated but after cleaning it up I'm not sure? There also appears to be some tarnish unlike a quality gold ring? Ring also has a real tiny set stone. Low Karat cause the tarnish maybe? Or is my ring a peice of junk?

Actually I don't care because I usually give away all my rings anyways? Just trying to figure if this WH10K means plated junk or....??????

I'll post some pics later when I find some decent coins to go along with the ring.....Thanks!!!!!

I think WH stands for white gold 10 karats. Don't see a pic of it so can't tell about tarnish but it's most likely white gold and has some value there.
That's kinda what I was thinking? Scoured the net last night and found nothing. Also cleaned up the ring and tarnish is gone, it's not plated, ring looks very well made, and I think I'll consider it a 10k gold...unless I hear otherwise? It cleaned up real nice and I'll post it when I get some decent coins to go with it.....Thanks!

Probably could take it to a jeweler and they could tell what it is for sure.

Otherwise, you could try weighing it and figuring volume, by water displacement. Then you should be able to tell if the weight is correct for solid gold.

I've found quite a few gold rings that show a dark tarnish on them in some areas particularly where there may have been any poor joints (maybe soldering) and if the gold quality is low. That seems to be the case with OLD rings that were stamped 10K and some foreign gold items too but I think they took advantage of a cheaper mix of the gold Karat quality on some of the touristy gold stuff I've found. The really nice bling, even 10K, does not show any dark tarnish. Quite a number of the rings Ive found have dates and initials on the inside and I'm pretty sure that at least 60 of them are over or about 100 years old so that dark tarnish takes some time to "bleed" out and show from being in the ground.

It's always great finding a ring, but there are an awful lot of snide rings being worn these days, so like already said see your jeweler who can test it.

From wikipedia:

White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal, usually nickel, manganese or palladium. Like yellow gold, the purity of white gold is given in karats.

So the ring does have some value. Take it to a jeweler to find out how much.
