to use an ultraviolet light. Ive also heard to use a flashlight and a pair of polarized sunglasses. Something about the way diamonds refract light. I dunno - never tried it.
 
Seem like you always find the neatest stuff! Also the stone for that ring could be an emerald, my wife has a similar ring with one in it.
 
Try panning for the loose stone.i found two that way.either with gold pan or 5 gallon bucket.run a hose in bucket while shaking it.most gemstones will settle to bottom if higher density than pea gravel.good luck! sam in ms
