Gold Quarter?

I found this hunting the beach, it looks like a gold bicentenial quarter. Anyone ever heard of these?

A lot of private companies put a thin plating of gold on ordinary quarters and sell them at significant markups. You can find the same thing done to the current series of state quarters. However the plating is generally so thin that it only adds a couple of cents to the coin's actual value.
In addition, from a numismatic standpoint these coins are considered to be novelty items because they were altered outside of the mint, so they do not have any special value to mainstream coin collectors.

Yeah, Bobs right...I found a gold Kennedy half once when I was new to this and thought I'd hit the jackpot! Took it into the local coin store, and they laughed at me!:sadwalk: Still, its a cool find, a lot rarer than any old regular Q, so Nice job!:clapping:

When my daughte was looking at colleges they had a science experiment that they wuld use to demonstrate what they would learn in chemistry where they would make dimes look gold.
I am sure there are many of those dimes around also.
