Gold prospecting with the AT Gold

I got my AT Pro late this afternoon so I didn't get to spend a lot of time with it. As soon as I got it together I headed for the river to try it out on some bedrock crevices. First let me say
that Garret made a real nice package with all the extras they give you with the AT Gold. The only thing they missed was a good plastic scoop.
The area I hunt is mostly Granite and Schist bedrock. I hunt cracks in the bedrock in the river beds. The gold is very small, the biggest nugget I have fond weighs 10 grains. The area has a lot of iron and black sand, and lots of hot rocks. I did some air test with the nugget that is on the card in the pic. The nugget is thin and the edges are not solid I would think it weighs 3to5 grains.
Max depth in all metal was about 3". I started gb the detector my ground ranged from a low of 61 to a high of 93 the only way I could keep a clean threshold was to run the sens. at about 1/2 anything above that and it was just to unstable. When I did get up on solid granite I could add another bar or two to the sens. and the threshold would stay stable, but anything over the gravel was a crap shoot. I ended up checking gb about every 10'. This is a noisy machine and it will take some time to get used to it. I did try the 2 disc patterns on my test nugget and it didnt pic it up. I picked one outcrop in the river to do my testing and I started hitting all the cracks on this 30'x30' granite rock. I had lots of targets, too many to dig in the short time I had. I dug about a dozen just to see what it was hitting on. All my targets were lead or copper. Id numbers were all over the place with nothing being consistant not even on my test nugget. I did throw a dime on the ground just to see what it would do. It nailed the dime with a 81.
Since there is no water in the Llano river I didn't get it wet. I will read the manual tonight to see if I can pick up some of the detectors tricks. I will hold my opinion on this GOLD machine until I get a few more hours on it.

Good post todd.
Seems most VLF's are a mess over gravel bars. Dirt and bedrock they seem to run smoother over.

I went out again this morning with the AT Gold after reading the manual last night. This thing works great on bedrock. I have no trouble rung the sens. at 75-80% with my gb at around 70to 80.
The machine is very sensitive to small objects. I dug 16 individual pieces of bird shot today. They were so small that my Garret Pro Pointer couldn't find them. The signal was a solid break in the threshold and was repeatable. Most of the cracks I dug were loaded with black sand which did cause a little falsing, but it was not a problem. There isn't any big gold were I am at so I can ignore all the loud targets if I choose. I dug a total of 34 pieces of lead today half was bird shot the rest was bullets and fishing weights. I did find 4 decayed zinc pennies. In my opinion this machine defiantly runs better in the all metal mode than it does in the 2 disc modes.
Hunting over the gravel will be difficult also along the transition line from sand and gravel to bed rock. I also found some good hot rocks and did a gb over them to see if it would change the way the machine ran, it didn't. I used to do this with my GB2 when I would hit large areas with lots of hot rocks. I ha vent found any gold yet but I have no doubts that the machine will detect it.

Sounds good...can you post a pic of those tiniest of lead shot next to a dime so we can see how small this thing will get targets?

Thanks

Nice report Todd!! interesting info in there.
I think you need to invite Ol' Big Cat up for a hunt with ya on the Llano. I've always wanted to do a little light prospecting, but have no expertise in that area. I might have a tough time scrambling up and down those river banks with my bum legs and ankle, but I sure would like to pan for some gold one time. And I'd be proud to pony up for some Coopers BBQ ribs too!!!

Well come on. We can go find a little color and then see what other trouble we can get into. PM me when your ready. llanogold@gmail.com

My AT Gold is supposed to be here Tuesday, so maybe we can meet up next Saturday. Maybe this rain we're getting will put a little water in the river.
