Gold Plated Thingy - What it is, I don't know...

Hello,

I found this in a civil war campsite area, (where many bullets & buttons were found).
Confused, not sure what it is. It is gold plated - for sure. The metal is pitted like it would be if in the ground for a long time.
Any ideas? Thank you in advance.
