Gold panning.....Lets talk pan color

I've seen silver metal pans
I've seen black plastic pans
I've seen blue plastic pans
I've seen green plastic pans
Now Fisher is going to be supplying red plastic pans.

Does the color of the pan make a difference?

I've got the old metal pans, and theyre OK, but I prefer the Garret Green pan over the others.
I think Horses for courses. I have tried the black ones too, but still go back to the GREEN ONE.
It seems to show up the gold better.

Hi Mike,

Ran this same thread over at the Alaska Gold Forum.

What you want to do when panning is separate gold from sand, usually dark colored sand. So you want the gold AND the sand to show well. Which is why black pans are not a good choice. They show the gold, but the black sand is hard to see. Steel pans don't show fine gold well unless they have been blued.

Green and blue are the preferred favorites for the serious miners. Black actually sells better to the masses just because they are cheaper.

There has been some interest in the red or purple or other odd colors, but I don't think they will replace green or blue for popularity with serious miners. Red does seem to be a color tat people like or hate.
