Gold on the 1st dig !

Well-known member
I went back to the same spot for two hours and got lots of targets tonight .My first ID number of the night was 10-foil-ring and yes it was the latter . It was about 4" deep . It has markings but no one in our house can make them out ( even with a magnifying glass ) I'm guessing it's 14K . My Brother in - law has a gold kit , he will check it out for me . I also dug up two pocket drops ( I've never done two in one trip before ) just clad but still lots of fun . I also dug up a lot of trash ( which will bring me closer to my next good find ) and three more nickels for the nickel jar . I've used the 6x8 SEF the last two trips and I really like it on the All PRO . Thanks for looking and Happy Hunting .

Awesome find Dirt Doctor. "P" is for "pretty" cool find. Love seeing the nickels as always and let us know what the writing is on the inside of the ring when you find out. You need a jeweler's loupe. We have several cause they come in real handy for seeing the dates on coins and to read what's stamped in or on the jewelry. It's a small price and most any coin shop would have one. Again, congratulations on your finds!

Dirt Doctor, Did you purchase a loupe yet? If that's a very old ring, it might not have any purity stamp on it. I'm thinking before 1906. Yes, that's the year. Here's an interesting read. http://www.professionaljeweler.com/archives/articles/1999/mar99/0399man3.html
Have you been able to take it to your brother in-law? It's a very nice find for sure!!!!

Hi Nancy , thanks for the great link . Sorry , it took me awhile to get back . I found one of my loupes I had around the house and it helped me locate some marks ( this ring just may be pre 1906 ) . My brother in law did come over but the gold test got pushed to the wayside because of a time factor . I think I will be getting a better Loupe and my own gold testing kit . I did get some pictures of the marks and the macro setting did magnify them a bit . Propping up the ring to get the right angle was a real Bear ( as was the lighting) and after many , many attempts this was the best I could do .

This spot has given up a lot of great old coins to many people over the years and the silver finds there now are very few and far between
as most of the previous hunters were cherry picking the silver . Over the years I have found several nice gold items there and I'm convinced there are more . I'll be hitting it again and again and..............

Beautiful! Thank you for posting the pictures. It a good possibility that it is pre 1906. I'm glad you found your loupe. They sure come in so handy at times (specially the older we get). As you know, a place is never hunted out. More power to you and I wish you the best and HH, Nancy
