Ok. I did a very non scientific experiment air testing various junk I have found with about 16 pieces of gold jewelry, mostly rings. Here is what I have found:
From 12-1 to 12-13 is a definite dig area for jewelry hunters. While can slaw and foil reside in this area, this is where most of my gold jewelry fell into. (11 total pieces. Mostly small to medium 10K to 14K rings and a couple of pendants). This is a definite dig area!
From 12-14 to 12-24 is pull tab capital city! Most all of my pull tabs (at least 50!) and other junk fell in this area. Two very nice 14K rings were here also at 12-16 and 12-20, but you would have had to dig a bazillion pulltabs to even hope to find them.
From 12-25 to 12-31 is an interesting area. A few old square tabs hit here, but not many. My largest 14K ring landed here at 12-26 as well as a heavy 10K pendant at 12-30 and my wife's 14K wedding band at 12-29. There seem to be a lot less targets in this range, so I say dig!
All tests were done in the air, which should not be a big deal as I am assuming most jewelry will be found fairly shallow. In easy dig areas of sand, wood chips, etc I say dig everything. But when you hit the sports fields or grassy park areas, maybe this will help a little in weeding through the dreaded tabs!
