Gold jewelry. I 've had my mxt

jayhop

Well-known member
for over a month now and i have dug what i think are two nice pieces of gold, a 14k ring and a pretty gold heart and cross necklace .
i dug both of these hopeing they were nickles and not pull tabs.
they both were dead on 18-20.
was this just luck or is the 18-20 range where you find a lot of gold?
i know i can look at the chart and can see rings all over the place but are there one or two ranges where most come in.
thanks for any info.

Yup, definitely gold/Nichol range. Pull-tabs, foil are exactly where gold jewelry chimes in. You can air-test gold jewelry that you already have. Thin gold bands can even be zero or negative. Very thin gold chains might not be picked up. That's why some guys use the high freq gold machines to hunt on beaches, like goldbug2 it's called microjewelry. I also think the sites you hunt increase your chances. HH

I agree that MOST small gold rings (women's) will come in at around 18-20, more or less. However, the big heavy men's rings or other heavier gold will be higher. The last two large rings I can remember were 38 and 47 VDI. The latter was nearly half an ounce. I've learned that most aluminum tabs are around 20-27 VDI, with a few exceptions in either direction, so I am now digging all VDI's over 35 because that's where I've found all the larger gold. I can tolerate a handful of screw caps to take home a huge gold ring.

If I were looking ONLY FOR GOLD, I would dig all signals 14-19 and 35-50. That would eliminate the vast majority of tabs but pull out most of the medium and large gold. Gold can be anywhere within the -5 to 50 VDI range so I would miss some, but this would increase the chances without digging thousands of tabs.

Thanks for the advise fellows. For the last two days i have been hunting an old baseball field that i used to play on about 37 years ago.
i was hoping for some silver but after about 120 coins no silver.I did find a spill today that contained 9 quarters 9 dimes and 6 nickels,I'll probably never do that again.
i was also hoping for at least 1 piece of gold but found none.
I dug 16-22 and 78 and up.I did dig some in between but got pull tabs and pennies.
I'll try more 35-50.
Thank again for sharing your knowledge.

Hi Jay,

Just echoing what others have said, I've seen gold come in all over the VDI spectrum. My lowest gold ring registered a solid 6-8 VDI, and my two highest were a 35-37 and 40-42. Most, for me, have fallen in the 14-20 range. I've also discovered that depth is a factor, often raising the VDI and increasing the range of readings on low-conductivity targets. For example, I found a tiny child's gold ring at about 5 inches which bounced around from about 37-70. I've had the same phenomenon a few times with deeper buffalo nickels, too. So, when in doubt, dig! The only time I really don't dig as much in the 22-40 range is in really trashy areas. My local park, for example, is absolutely loaded with pull tabs, and it just gets tiring digging them one after another.

HH,

Dan

Thanks Dan,I'll dig 18-20 no dought, nickels, gold and modern pull tabs. Now I'll start digging more in the 35-50 range.
i know I'll still get mostly larger pull tabs. But I hate to think I'm leaving a nice ring behind. The ball field that i have been hunting is full of signal between 22-77 which i did not dig except maybe 25 to 30 of them and they were all tabs.

As someone else mentioned dig those low vdi's also. Recently in the DFX forum someone dug gold at a vdi reading of 6! So be careful
