Gold Jewelry hits

Flying Pig

New member
Just got my V3i this week and for being brand new at MDing, I am not finding it as intimidating as I thought. My question is that when I have been testing it on my own personal jewelry...two rings known to be 18 k gold, I am surprised at which frequency responds the strongest. I had anticipated that the high range (22.5/top bar) would be the strongest, yet it consistently responds with the mid range (7.5) hitting the strongest. I could be misunderstanding something, or my wife hasn't told me everything about where she got my wedding ring?

I really is all over the board for gold. I've found rings all the way up to 57 VDI. Size, shape, karat, metal blends, all add to the puzzle. Most of my rings do hit on 22.5.

Thank you...that helps a bunch.

Don't worry about your results as they are based on only 2 rings. I recover lost valuables for a living and I assure you, everything you know about coins and other everyday items, do not apply to gold. Gold is a sneaky buggar, regardless of what machine you are using, gold will come in all over the place. Turn your rings at different angles when you air test them just to see what I mean. I find most gold comes in at trash VDI's (pull tabs/foil) and either way they won't scream at you that its gold. If gold is what you are going for, be prepared to dig tons of foil and pull tabs. I hope I am not discouraging you but this is the reality of finding gold. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Although gold tends to come in stronger in the 22.5khz band, it definitely can hit on the 7.5khz band as well depending on the composition as Rob has mentioned. If you are specifically looking for gold, however, I would run solely in the 22.5khz band but thats just me. Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions. HH -Marc

It depends on the size of the ring. Conversely, small silver rings can read in the single digits with the dominant freq 22.5 KHz.

Thanks again guys,,,,I appreciate all your comments!
