Gold Jewelry and The Right Detector

Let me start off by stating that this is not a loaded question, nor is it meant to start a squabble. I would like some honest answers about whether you guys think the Minelabs (SE's, E-Trac's) perform better at finding gold jewelry items (being multi-freq. than say a White's V3 which has a22.5 freq.--that is advertised as a good freq. for gold). I hunt mostly with my SE, but I do have a Garrett 2500 (S.F.Machine) and it apps that I find more jewelry w/the Garrett. (Which might be just that days luck, or just having the coil over the right target on any given day) Is there any real difference and/or benefit between multi-freq to a single freq. machine. Honest answers please--I'm torn between buying the E-Trac and the V3.

Hi Mackie,

I thought I'd chime in here, even though I'm far from an expert. I have an EX2 that I've owned for a couple of months, and a Garrett Ace 250 that I've owned for three years. With the Ace, a solid nickel signal that repeats at 90 deg has been a gold ring on at least 7 occasions. Of course, this signal has also resulted in the blue and red anodized pulltabs, and sometimes thicker foil or aluminum can-slaw. But I always have total confidence in digging this signal.

Perhaps when I find the first gold ring with my EX2 I'll learn what to look out for. I suppose its logical for me to dig all nickel signals (which I do) and a gold ring will turn up at some point.

Last week I took my Ace out for the first time since getting the Explorer, and in a 1 1/2 hour hunt found a gold ring. I'm not saying I wouldn't have found it with the Explorer, but at least for now, I consider my Ace to be a much better prospect for finding gold.

Hopefully some of the experienced Explorer users will reply to your post. I for one will be watching and learning.

I think the only way to answer your question, (to your satisfaction), is to get a sample of targets that you will be looking for and test them on your SE. My SE Pro has trouble seeing small link gold jewelry, necklaces and bracelets in my ground, (not beaches). I have found two bracelets W/144 diamonds total and a rope necklace that did not make the slightest beep on my SE in all metal. All three targets found with the DFX and V3 come in loud and clear in the 3 to 15 VDI range. I think it is a matter of matching the machine to the type of hunting you are doing. No one detector does it all although they are getting very close.

As far as my SE id deffently give the gold edge to the whites. You almost have to disc out coins or you just find yourself listening for the high pitch after you are out for awhile. There is a deffent difference to the sound of gold... but for most of us it just not investigated. The V3 should have an advantage with that 22 freq provided there is enough seperation to th tones. Ive got a few bags of jewerly ive found with the whites.... but it has to be a special sound for me to stop for those rings using the Se. OR... there isnt a lot of trash and im really listening and checking most targets. Thats where patience comes in. I might give the edge to whites for jewerly... silver at depth you cant beat the explorers. Now on the beach its a toss-up.

All's I can say from my own gold finding eperience is that I found 3 gold last year (18k 9.9g ring, 14k 1.8g ring, and a 14k 0.2g earring) with my Ace 250 and I have found a big fat 0 with my minelab se. Im just sayin guys don't kill me.....

thank you (Dewcon4414) and everyone else for the responses--I feel the same way about the SE. I'm outnumbering the SE by at least 7 to 1 on jewelry with my Garrett. My detector of choice has been the exp. line for the last 8 yrs, never tried a whites'. But I think that's about to change. Wish that I'd run into someone using a whites while I'm out, but I very seldom see anyone else out detecting. (hobby isn't to popular in my area--which is both good and bad) Thanks Again Mack
