Gold in Indiana

JLBYERS

New member
Very new to Looking for Gold, but have been told theres gold in the steams in Central Indiana,,, Possibly Sugar Creek,, Kilmore Creek ect.. Been doing some reading, but unsure how to start the process,,,,,,,, Highbanker,,, Sluice,,,, Panning ? Any suggestions would be helpful,,, Thank you JL BYERS

You have a guy from your own state by the name of Chuck Lassiter who is one of the most knowledgeable prospectors in the entire midwest. I have his book called "Midwest gold Prospecting" and it should be of great help to you. Good Luck with your search.

Just what Mntmn said and I would only buy the essentials to start a gold pan tools to get into the cracks and sifter maybe a small sluice

From what i've read the gold in in is'nt native, but was brought down from canada by the glaciers that scooped out lake michigan, thus it's small. I believe there is a gpaa(gold prospectors of america) group south of indy. there may be some other group also. Do a search to find them and talk to them. PS think a gold pan and classifier would be a good start- not exspensive but very capable if used in the right place.

Here is your basics: a standard 14" gold pan, no need for a fancy one. A 3/8 or 1/4' classifier that fits either a 2 or 5 gal. bucket, either a 2 gal. or 5 gal. bucket to fit the classifier, a plastic sniffer and snuffer sucker bottle for picking up your fines, a couple of vials to hold any gold, a powerful magnifying glass, stainless steel trowel and a 30" prospector's shovel. I also like to use a small 3 legged fold up chair to sit on while panning. All of this should come to under a $100 including shipping. Once you have panned for awhile, if it looks like you want to continue prospecting then get yourself a quality long length sluice such as a river sluice for catching the really fine stuff. You can add other equipment as you go on. Chuck Lassiter's book will tell you where and how to find the kind of glacial gold that Indiana contains.

first place to start is with the gold pan. it's the first tool in finding gold. You need it to sample areas to locate the gold.. once it is found a sluice box can be set up to process the gold bearing material. The sluice will add another +- $100 to the equipment cost..
