I am considering getting a explorer XS to use mainly for detecting coins. I was wondering if anyone had used the XS in the detection of raw gold in the ground and if so what was the result.

I haven't looked for gold with mine, but you could ask on the Aussie Treasurehunters list. there are several folks on there with Explorers, some may have had a bit of a look for the yellow stuff

The Minelab makes a specific detector for GOLD and it is awesome for detecting micro nuggets if that is the type of gold you are detecting. If you mean gold coins, watches, rings etc. then the Explorer or Sovereign will do just fine but they will not find things as small as stud earings.
Good Luck
Jim
