Gold, I say!!!

It was hotter than the dickens today, but I toughed it out for about 5 hours and I'm glad I did. The find of the day was a whopper of a college class ring that weighs almost 27 grams. It does have a name in it and I'm trying to track down the owner. There's a small diamond in it, as well, and it's 14K. It's an expensive ring and I'm sure he'll want it back. Hopefully I'll be able to find him, but I'm almost positive he doesn't live in this area anymore. I'll update the post if I'm able to get it back to him. I also found a couple of Rosies, a few wheats, some metal coins that look like they were part of a series on dinosaurs (there's a picture of the dinosaur on one side and facts about it on the other...they're about the size of a half dollar), a woman's Timex watch and part of a Distinguished Flying Cross medal. I love days like today because the broad variety keeps things interesting and helps me focus when I'd rather be sitting in some air conditioning. Here's some photos.

Thanks for looking and I hope you had a successful day if you went out.

WOW !! That is a big one. Congrats on the gold and good luck in your search of the owner.

That is a real monster! Very nice hunting there, silver looks good:clapping:...I got one of those dinosaur coins this year too, still after a dang ring that big though!.

Very nice save on all that variety. Good luck finding the owner of the huge ring. HH

Thanks. It's looking promising to get it returned. I called the registrar's office at his university and they gave me some minimal information about him. Born in 1966, in the USAF, etc. But, they, understandably, won't give out his address or phone number. Luckily I have a friend that has access to the global e-mail listing for active duty Air Force personnel and I asked him to look for the guy and then send him an e-mail to get in touch with me. It'll be interesting to hear the story of how he lost it if things work out. I doubt I'll be able to deliver it in person though since he definitely does not live in my town anymore.

Nice ring.....and other finds...Congrats!!!
They won't give you contact info but they can take your info and relay it to the owner....Joustens has done that for me b4...try calling them...also zabasearch.com is a free people finder...some info is helpful from there listings. GL

Well, against all odds, I found the owner of the ring. He is now a Lt Col in the USAF and working at the Pentagon. My buddy that had access to the Air Force global e-mail listings talked to him this morning and gave him my contact information. I haven't personally talked with him yet, but he described the ring to a tee to my buddy so I have no doubt that it's his. It was a gift from his wife when he graduated college and was lost in 2003. I'm sure he'll be excited to have it again.

Tough to beat that for a great story! Congratulations!:clapping::clapping:

Thanks. I mailed it to him yesterday and he should have it tomorrow. I've asked him to send me a photo with him and the ring when he gets it.

Good job! You have just made a friend in high places! Maybe he can get you some sort of top secret clearance to detect on some govt. base. Wouldn't that be the something?:clapping:

great save mason.....congrats on the return also..... hmmmm-- political science, pentagon, for what its worth you may want to see if he has any political power to help keep metal detecting on public lands legal.... after all theres no way he would have gotten his ring back if the property you were hunting on was restricted - and im not implying that it was..... we can use all the help we can get and your actions in this situation go along way toward keeping the hobby in a positive light..... congratulations and thank you.....

Thanks. I know he told his boss (a 2 star general) about it and the general was impressed. Maybe in the future I'll have to call in a favor. Some military installations allow detecting and some do not. It's pretty much up to the installation commander. I'm sure a situation like this one will be favorable to us all.
