Gold Fever......a problem for Minelab!

The kind of problem we'd all like to have. I had read on some prospecting forums of a shortage of the 4500 model PI because of a Gold Boom in Africa. Taking everything with a grain of Salt I did a little more checking. Right now on the Bay is a 4500 @ $8K+ and the bidding isn't done! My understanding is that in Africa these are going for +$10K a pop.

Apparently Minelab can't make them fast enough to meet current demand with some saying their capacity is 300/mo. of that model. Don't know whether that's true or not, but with Gold spiking at over $1K USD it's only going to get worse in the foreseeable future.

Now may be the time for cashing in our Gold Ring finds too. Sure wish I had one of those Minlab detectors ..It would be for sale in a hurry LOL

over $1000 an ounce today - should be a gold boom everywhere! Too bad I keep pulling these :pulltab: instead of rings :)

I have read lots about this, yes a gold rush in Africa but...

I have heard Moslem Africans that are working being hired on in the Dubai, Qatar, Saudi Arabia are buying buying alot of these 4500's and sending them back to Africa to friends or relatives.

Also they do not need a GPX4500 as a new SD2200v2 (or a second hand 2100, 2200, or GP unit) would work just fine for them and that is all they really need over there.

"It wont be long before all detectors are going to be in demand, as I dont think they havent twigged as yet that the differences between (Minelab PI)models are not hugely significant, all of the machines are very capable on what is basically new ground.

How many patches were found here in the early detecting days with Garrett groundhogs and Whites etc,a lot of the main ones that are still targetted now, so its the same story all over again."

Since the short supply of 4500's , the price is up, just like buying a stock on the stock market, and the value rises.

The 2 other PI gold prospecting metal detectors, the Garrett Infinium LS(both 10"x14" DD and Mono coils available for it) and the Whites PulseScan TDI(uses all the 4500 coils) would work just fine as well, no need to buy a 4500 in Africa.

There is something fishy going on is what I have heard from otthers and I also think this myself.

GPX-4500 made of gold?

Also:
"I was just at this moment comparing the listings of the 4500s in the US and here in Australia, it seems to me that the 4500s that are being described as "like new" or "as new" are attracting the attention of the bidders, but there are many more used 4500s that are barely getting any attention at all.

I smell a rat, and I feel that not all, but some of these auctions are being pumped up by shill bidding, for the obvious purpose of driving up the prices on ebay so that when the machines are offered on the markets that they are heading for in Sudan ect the sellers are showing potential customers this and demanding exorbitant prices for them.

Many of the listings are highlighting the fact that new machines are not available at the moment and this is to back up what it probably being said to the potential buyers in these areas, causing the prices to get higher as the demand grows, if these machines are selling for $9,000 US or so what do you think they would be worth in Sudan, theres some very smart manipulation of these markets going on, and a lot of people are likely to get shafted over it all.

When more new machines are available and they start hitting the market the prices still may stay high for awhile, people who are on the waiting list both here and in the US etc will flood the market with new machines in the hope of making massive profits, but like all things it will return to normal eventually.

Your decision to either get involved in the scam or keep out of it is up to you, I for one believe that its wrong for people to support or perpetuate situations like this on the basis of greed, on moral grounds, but like all of these things the people who are really going to get hurt are the ones who can least afford to be, they might get a detector and find gold but I doubt very much they will either get to keep it or get paid what its really worth, the gold that is found and sold to buyers by woman who pan the mullock heaps left by the diamond miners in Sierra Leone get very little for it but to them its food money so they have no choice, so the cycle continues.

I would imagine that if you got on to a patch in one of these places the very worst thing to do would be to tell anybody, or try to sell the gold, you would be knocked off and buried in a ditch somewhere, no worries, the warlords and such will have these areas tied up in no time, and they will be the ones making the money, them and the government, and the likes of Mugabie and his cronies, and like all these events in Africa many people are already suffering and will continue to suffer and lose their lives.

If you are contemplating the idea of going to one of these places prospecting them I would seriously think again, I know of people who have tried this and were lucky to have escaped with their lives, they were robbed, shot at, and terrorised until they fled with only the clothes on their backs, everything they found was helping to sign their death warrants, I dont believe it will be any different for any other prospectors either from in the country or from overseas."

A shortage can be good for business.

Take your best shooting buddies with you.
An Ak can be had cheap in Africa or so I've heard. You already have a metal detector.

Just a Thought
